I believe people are over-reacting to yesterday's bad showing, and
thus failing to note Trevor has ALREADY turned his season around.
Let's look at combined figures for his last 9 appearances before the
contest yesterday [May 10 to May 30, 2008):
TREVOR last 9 games
=====================================================
IP H ER K BB whip ERA saves
=====================================================
9 6 2 14 1 .077 2.00 6
That's 14 freaking strikeouts and 1 walk in 9 innings. He is back
to being the Trevor of old. I'm saying that great numbers over 9
games matter more than bad numbers in one game.
Let's face it: we've been spoiled for 14 years by one of the best
closers of all time. When he has a Bad day, we're too ready to
put a fork on him.
Believe in Trevor Hoffman, and keep the faith.

Good stats, Hoov. It seems a lot of fans always go into "Dump Trevor" mode
after he hits a rough patch. One factor that seldom gets mentioned is the
fact that he can go for a week at a time without the chance to make a
meaningul appearance. Imagine if Hoffy pitched for a team that provided
more save opportunities. The guy can only get a save when we're ahead in
the late innings, a pretty rare situation this year.
I'm with you & Padredog, I'm sticking with Trevor.

Does it not concern you at all that left handers are hitting .382 off him? >> Stay informed about: Trevor: May 10 - May 30 |

Yes it does, but I'm encouraged the righties are batting just .190. >> Stay informed about: Trevor: May 10 - May 30 |

Lefty batting average against Hoffman is now down to .325.
But we are talking about 13 hits in 40 at-bats, so the sample
size is pretty small.
4 of the 5 extra base hits Trevor has allowed this year,
however, have been by lefties, so that is a concern.
Ditto, 5 of the 6 walks are against lefty batters.
OTOH, he has struck out 15 of the 40 left-handers
he has faced this year, vs. 12 of 46 vs. righties. >> Stay informed about: Trevor: May 10 - May 30 |

I hope, for Trevor's sake, that you swallow. >> Stay informed about: Trevor: May 10 - May 30 |

It's been my feeling that part of Trevor's problem this season (especially
with lefties), as well as several other pitchers in key situations, has been
the pitch calling of Barrett.
I've noticed that he seems to fall in love with a pitch and call the same
pitch several times in a row.
He did this in that crucial AB against T.Gwynn Jr. in Milwaukee at the end
of the season... had Hoffy throw him nothing but changeups the entire AB...
and like a smart hitter, he started to recognize it and adjusted to it.
He's done it several times this season. One of Hoffy's blown saves came on a
rip where he threw nothing but fastballs to a pretty good hitter.
Hoffman's still a very good pitcher, but with a fastball that tops out at
about 86-87, his game is keeping the batter off balance with the change and
occasional slider mixed in. Without the blazing fastball, there's little
margin for error if location is off. You can't throw several consecutive 86
MPH fastballs, or several consecutive changeups for that matter, to a decent
major league hitter without getting burned occasionally. If I'm noticing
this pattern, you can be certain that ML hitters (many of whom keep books on
pitchers) are going to pick up on it. >> Stay informed about: Trevor: May 10 - May 30 |

Excellent analysis. I repeat, you should be a bench coach. >> Stay informed about: Trevor: May 10 - May 30 |

Heh, heh... )
Maybe those 13 years I spent managing my company-league softball team paid
off! ;oD >> Stay informed about: Trevor: May 10 - May 30 |
