Along with 80% of the other MLB teams. Puppet had a deal for Jamie
Moyer, but Moyer nixed it (10&5).

The current market for pitchers and sluggers strongly favors the
sellers. The Astros aren't motivated enough to pay the premium prices
the sellers are asking.

We traded Keith Ginter and Wayne Franklin in the Loretta deal. We traded
Tony McKnight for Williams. I don't think McKnight has been in MLB for
three or four seasons. Ginter is a bench warmer in Oakland now, with a
..515 OPS. Franklin's ERA has risen the past few seasons, going from 5.50
with the Brewers in 2003 to 6.40 in 2004 with the Giants and to 12.27
(in only 4 2/3 innings) with the Mets. Which one of those three players
would you have liked to see remain as an Astro?

Some players fit into short-range plans better than they do long-range
plans. Part of that is salary. Williams and Loretta were going to cost
either their former teams before the trade or the Astros afterward a lot
more after their contracts expired than while they were under contract.
