Actually, due to the current higher level of free agent salaries and the
fact that Manny's only got about a year and a half left on his deal,
plus his options (which he might require to be picked up as part of
any deal, or he might nix the deal), Manny's not quite as expensive
as he's been in the past.
I do agree that it will still be difficult to trade Manny, since by default,
there won't be many teams that can afford Manny. Still, I'm quickly
coming to the opinion that in the long run, the Sox would be better off
trading (if possible) Manny and keeping Coco. It would, of course,
change the nature of the Red Sox offense, but Coco does seem to be
well on the road to returning to his old, true, self. And together with
Ellsbury and Drew, the Red Sox would have a very fast, exciting,
and competent set of outfielders who would be able to run down
tons of balls in any ballpark in the majors. And, if later on, the Sox were
to decide that they needed to have a big bopper in LF, that's always
still an option.
