I know this sounds crazy since the Cardinals are still only 4 games out, but
the odds of them winning the division are slim. If it was just one team
ahead of them it'd be different. The Cubs or Brewers could fall flat the
last 2 months but I don't think both of them will. So....

I asked one of my Cardinal-fan friends if trading Lohse would be a good
idea. If the Cards lose the next two games and find themselves 5 or 6 back
with one day left before the trading deadline should they trade Lohse? I
bet there are teams that would overpay for him right now.

He's having a career year and will be an overpriced free agent this
offseason if he continues to pitch well the next two months (ala Suppan and
Weaver). If he pitches more like his career numbers would indicate then
the Cardinals will have made a good move by getting something for him when
they had the chance.

With Carpenter and Wainright back next year they don't really need Lohse.
Will ownership be willing to pony up in the CC sweepstakes?

MLB Trade rumors says this isn't an option.

Good idea. Too bad they didn't think of this with Loopy when he was
hot. Now they'll probably try to turn him back into a closer if
Wainwright can start.

I think that they should trade Lohse and that you make a convincing
case for it here, Eric. As I've written in other threads here today,
I don't think that the Cardinals can stay with the Cubs and Brewers
and could fall as far as 15 games back. Lohse's trade value is never
going to be higher than it is right now, and he's going to want more
money than he's worth in the offseason. Ship him.

They would scuttle the idea of Wainwright being the closer.

Are you willing to pay him 11-12M/year for the next 3 years and take that
chance?

The Royals or the Mariners might...

You're fooling yourself. $11-12 million is the going rate for a Jeff
Suppan in today's market. If he reaches 17 or more wins, the year Lohse
is having will definitely put him in a higher salary class than Soup.

6-7 is average pitcher money these days. Someone will give him 10+ for
sure.
