Rumors abound that the Marlins are in trade talks with the Orioles,
which would send Derek Lee to Baltimore for Jeff Conine. Conine is a
very popular player here in South Florida, and I believe, lives here
in the off-season. Both Lee and Conine are making 4.7 mil this year.
Conine will make 5 mil next year. I think Lee will be eligible for
arbitration this coming winter. What do you guys think?

My thoughts: Lee has an excellent stats as a "second half" player.
Also, he is 27 years old. Conine is 37. Conine has more power.
Marlins would be "renting" him for one year at best, while Lee has a
long career ahead of him. And Lee's defense can't be faulted. He is
constantly digging low throws out of the dirt. I think he prevents a
lot of runs from scoring.

This will be a terrible trade, but i guess this is what the Marlins are
known for. I too heard Marlins are practicing Cabrera at first base. No
question, something is cooking, and doesn`t smell too good. BTW, Marlins are
playing great ball, right behind Expos and Phillies.

While I wouldn't make the deal, it's far from a terrible deal. I think they
would keep Conine for next year while there is a good chance we will lose
Lee after this season. Bottom line is, players are going to have to go
next season because Loria and half man can't afford an $80 million payroll.
If I had to lose anyone from the infield it would be Lee. Lowell and
Castillo are keepers and Gonzalez is a good defender but you can't count on
him with runners in scoring position. How many times has he come through
with the basesloaded? Not many.

I still think Cabrera will be our "future" first base, why i think is a
terrible trade, well, i rather trade for a set up or middle reliever. If the
Marlins are to make any kind of run for the playoff, they need all the
pitching they can get.
Well, i don`t blame Loria or any other owner to get into anything close to a
80 mill payroll, i personally think this is outrageous, and in the long run,
it eventually will harm baseball. Example, the Mets, are those players worth
that kind of money? I don`t think so.

I agree that we need bullpen help. I argued that point in the off season
when Loria decided to spend valuable money on a pitcher to an in division
team, that we need some decent arms in the pen. I also would not have
signed Pudge for $10 million and defer that salary over 3 years. Think
about what all that defered money could do to a cash strapped organization?

As far as a trade for the pen, yes we need it but NOT Benetiz! The holes
that need filling is in the pen and we need someone, anyone who can get a
"clutch" hit.

I doubt they would move Cabrera to first since he has had to get used Left
and you don't want to force to many changes to a rookie. Cabrera still
might be at third next year as Lowell might become a free agent.

Disagree about Pudge, he has played very well, and won a few games with his
timely hitting, sure, 10 mill is a lot of money. Hate to do this, but the
correct spelling is Benitez, not Benetiz, to be honest, if the price is
right, i wouldn`t mind having him. Still think Lee and Penny will be gone,
and eventually Cabrera will play first.

I don't argue about what Pudge has done this season. I think that the 10
mill could have been spent. Red and Castro would have done a decent job at
catcher.

My problem with Pudge's deal is you have a cash strapped organization, that
will be paying a salary, for someone who won't be on the team next year.
That's $7 million that could go for a free agent that will instead be
defered to Pudge. Same thing with Hampton. Next year the Marlins could be
paying for 2 players salary who won't be on the team. Take that money and
use it on Lowell or Castillo or a free agent. It's called fiscal
responsibility. Something that half-man cried about last year. Winning
this year will be great to bring in fans but if there is a selloff or
another fire sale, the gains in support this year will be lost.

After I sent the post the I backtracked on my statement about Benetiz. I'm
one of the first to believe that a change of scenary could do a Benetiz
well.
