Why???????
The team he took over was built by Showalter and once Tino, O'Neil and
to an extent Leyritz left they became the team to beat in the east but
that's it.
Let's get some ballplayers like the ones mentioned above (Rowand comes
to mind) and see what happens. >> Stay informed about: Get Torre Now |

Torre had a bottomless money supply which is a serious advantage. However,
we've all seen 'bought' teams that couldn't get it together. Lots of teams
spend a lot of money, Torre/Yankees have done so successfully. We could do
worse. >> Stay informed about: Get Torre Now |

Think they'd spend that kind of money on a manager? >> Stay informed about: Get Torre Now |

Agree, we're doing worse right now with Grady Little.

Only on this newsgroup can one learn that the loss of Jim Leyritz led to the
downfall of the hated N.Y. Yankees.

Along with Tino Martinez, Paul O'Neil. Those were solid ballplayers
not the prima donnas that most teams look for, they knew how to play
the game; shortening their swing with 2 strikes, hitting to the
rightside with a man on second, putting the ball in play with a man on
third and less then 2 outs, hitting a cutoff man, even coaching the
runner coming home on whether he should slide or not. They also got in
the face of other players when they were dogging it. These are the
type of players we need on this team. They would do more then any
manager would to make any team better. >> Stay informed about: Get Torre Now |

Okay. But the Padres seem to have rebounded from the devastating loss of
Leyritz, so I dunno why your Yankees, in your opinion, can't.

First of all, I am far from being a Yankee fan. I enjoy watching the
yanks lose more then watching the Dodgers win.
Secondly the pods recovered because they picked up the great Rob Mackowiak . >> Stay informed about: Get Torre Now |

Okay Smee. I get it now, and my hat's off to you. Great job of pulling my

In this case, I think the Yankees were simply a team that was a perfect
fit for Torre. This might sound like an insult, but it really isn't -
Torre's best skill as a manager with the Yankees was simply keeping the
team from murdering each other and getting out of the way of his team's
success. For example, when Jeff Nelson bitched several years ago about
Torre leaving him off the All-Star roster, Torre didn't engage in a war
of words with Nelson or limit his role or insist on Cashman sending
Nelson out of town. Torre simply kept using Nelson properly and the
mini-controversy never became an issue. Doesn't sound like much, but a
large percentage of managers wouldn't act that way.
I'm not sure he'd be a good fit for the Dodgers, with quite a few
personnel decisions up in the air. While Torre's proven to be quite
good at keeping a team running, even with the Yankees, by far his best
performance as a manager, there were times he let roster management get
completely away from him, so when things didn't go according to plan,
you get problems like Miguel Cairo getting starts at 1st or Bernie
Williams playing in centerfield look past the point where it became
comical.
