Today in Padre History
May 9, 1996

Padres 7, Pirates 1

San Diego scores 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning, as well as 3 in the
top of the 7th inning, to beat Pittsburgh, 7-1. Although the team has 11
hits, only 1 (a double by first baseman Wally Joyner) is for extra bases.
Center fielder Steve Finley and right fielder Tony Gwynn each have 2 singles
and 2 runs scored, while Gwyn and Joyner each have 2 RBI. Starter Andy
Ashby (4-2) goes 7 innings, giving up 8 hits, walks, and 1 earned run,
while striking out 3 to get the win. Reliever Tim Worrell pitches 2
scoreless innings to wrap up the win.

For the Pirates, both left fielder Al Martin and center fielder Mike Kingery
go 3 for 4; Pittsburgh's only run comes from a solo home run by first
baseman Mark Johnson. Starting pitcher Paul Wagner (4-3) takes the loss,
allowing 7 hits, 5 walks, and 4 earned runs in 6 innings.

At: Three Rivers Stadium
Attendance: 10,863
