Today in Padre History
May 4, 1998

Third baseman Andy Sheets replaces shortstop Quilvio Veras in the lineup
after one-half inning and goes on to collect 3 hits, a 3-run homer, and 4
RBI as the Padres top the Brewers, 13-5, in San Diego's first-ever regular
season game in Milwaukee. Right fielder Tony Gwynn and catcher Carlos
Hernandez also have 3 hits apiece, and left fielder Greg Vaughn tacks on a
2-run homer for the Padres.

Starting pitcher Sterling Hitchcock (1-0) goes 5 innings, allowing 5 runs
and 9 hits, but walks none and strikes out 6 to get the win. Reliever Don
Wengert gets his first and only save of the season--and as a Padre--by
pitching 4 innings of shutout ball.

Second baseman Fernando Vina leads Milwaukee's offense with 3 hits,
including a double, and 1 run scored. Starter Jose Mercedes (2-2) lasts but
3-1/3 innings, giving up 12 hits and 11 runs to San Diego.
