Today in Padre History

May 8, 1980

Padres 9, Cubs 6

San Diego scores 6 runs in the last three innings--including 4 in the top of
the 8th, to come from behind to beat Chicago, 9-6. The Padres have 11 hits
by 10 different players, and the 9 runs are scored by 8 different players.
Second baseman Dave Cash is the only Padre with 2 hits, and also scores 2
runs. Pinch hitters Jerry Turner and Kurt Bevacqua both reach base and pull
off a double steal (second and home) in the 8th inning.

Starter Gary Lucas lasts 4-2/3 innings, giving up all 6 Cubs runs.
Relievers John D'Acquisto, Bob Shirley (2nd win), and Rollie Ringers (3rd
save) shut down Chicago the rest of the way. Cubs reliever Bruce Sutter
gives up the 3 8th inning runs to take the loss.

At Wrigley Field
Attendance: 6,692

Tomorrow:
Mark Thurmond pitches a complete-game gem.

In 15 big league seasons, "Dirty Kurt" Bevacqua stole a total of 12 bases !

When Kurt broke from 1st, the Cubs catcher must have been enraged at the
effrontery, and in trying to throw him out by 30 feet, momentarily lost track
of Jerry Turner at 3rd base.

The Padre manager who ordered this longshot double-steal bid was our own
Col. Jerry Coleman, who turns out to be a regular River Boat gambler !

Can't you just hear all 6,692 of those drunks BOOING after that double steal ?
Even a great like Bruce Sutter might spit the bit in that poisonous atmosphere.
