Today in Padre History

June 8, 1974



Padres 4, Cardinals 3



Right fielder Bobby Tolan and third baseman Dave Roberts each have solo home
runs to lead San Diego past St. Louis, 4-3. Roberts also has an RBI on a
fielder's choice in Padres' 3-run 3rd inning. San Diego starting pitcher
Dan Spillner (2-1) gets the win by throwing 7-1/3 innings, giving up 10 hits
and 2 earned runs while striking out 7. Reliever Vicente Romo earns his 7th
save of the season by pitching a scoreless 1-1/3 innings.



Cardinal starter Mike Thompson (0-2) lasts only 2 innings and takes the
loss. Catcher Ted Simmons goes 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 runs, and 2 RBI
to lead the St. Louis offense.



Padre record/standing: 22-39, 6th place, 21 games behind Los Angeles.



At: San Diego Stadium

Attendance: 27,801

I remember the 1974 team well. They were AWFUL. Loveable but
really awful. I have new appreciation for the 2008 Padres when I
think of the 1974 edition.

1974 had its Big moment of glory (in June or July) with the greatest
one-game comeback in Padre history. They trailed the Pirates by
8-0 going to the 8th inning... then scored 4 in the 8th and 5 in the
9th to win it 9-8.

Jerry Coleman and Dave Campbell were quite vocal in the 9th. Smile
