San Diego first baseman Ivan Murrell leads off the 9th inning with a home
run to send the Padres past St. Louis, 4-3. Murrell goes 3 for 4 with a
double and 2 RBI, while third baseman Dave Roberts chips in a single,
double, run, and RBI. Starting pitcher Mike Caldwell throws 7-1/3 innings,
giving up 8 hits and 2 earned runs, but it is reliever Rich Troedson (2-0)
who gets the win, while Mike Corkins picks up his 1st save of the year.
St. Louis first/third baseman Joe Torre goes 2 for 4 with 1 run to lead the
Cardinal offense, and right fielder Jose Cruz and catcher Ted Simmons each
have a double. Starting pitcher Reggie Cleveland pitches 5-2/3 innings, and
reliever Wayne Granger (1-2) throws 3-1/3 innings to take the loss.
