Padres 5, Mets 4



Right fielder Dave Winfield caps a 4-run San Diego 5th inning by hitting a
3-run home run to lead the Padres past New York, 5-4. Shortstop Ozzie Smith
has 2 hits, including a double, for San Diego. Starting pitcher Randy Jones
(5-3) throws 7-2/3 innings, giving up 9 hits and all 4 runs. Rollie Fingers
gains his 12th save of the season by pitching the final 1-1/3 innings.



New York's offense is led by catcher John Stearns, who has 2 hits-including
a 2-run homer, and 2 runs scored. Starting pitcher Nino Espinosa (5-3)
takes the loss, pitching 7 innings and giving up all 5 Padre runs.



Padre record and standing: 22-26, 4th place, 9.5 games behind San Francisco.

Attendance: 9,943
