San Diego starts the bottom of the 3rd inning with 5 consecutive hits to
chase New York starter Pat Zachry. The hits are by center fielder Ruppert

Kennedy (single), third baseman Luis Salazar (triple), and first baseman

Padre starting pitcher John Curtis lasts only 4 innings and gives up 8 hits

The Mets are led by pinch hitter Joel Youngblood, who delivers a
bases-loaded double in the fourth inning for 3 RBI. Right fielder Ellis
Valentine is the only New Yorker with 2 hits. Reliever Jesse Orosco (0-3)
pitches 3 innings and takes the loss despite giving up only 1 earned run.

Of note: new manager Dick Williams did not throw away outs with
compulsive Sacrifice Bunts in this 9th inning rally. He let the
boys swing away.

As HOFer Earl Weaver points out, Outs are precious things,
you only get 27 a game, so make them count.
