Dombrowski is quoted in today's Ann Arbor News saying that the Tigers will
be going after Vlady as top option and then Tejada. He also indicated he was
thinking of "more than $10 million." Good, b/c the price for Vlady will be a
lot more than $10 million. Also a hint that the Tigers will go after
Hentgen but not Colon or Millwood. Makes good sense. No mention of relief
pitchers, which is a big need. General talk of going after hitters, which is
also good.

Given a choice between Colon and Hentgen, I'd think Colon would be the
better choice. Consider Hentgen last season with Baltimore had a 4.09
ERA and a 7-8 record. Injuries limited him somewhat. He will also be
35 in a week. Hentgen's career record is a 4.21 ERA and a 129-103
record with only 2 shutouts in his career which began in 1991.

Bartolo Colon, on the other hand, had a 3.78 ERA and a 15-13 record
with the White Sox last season. Bartolo is only 30 years old. His
career, which began in 1997, has been solid with a 3.86 ERA and a
100-62 record. He also has been hell on the Tigers, so I'd rather
have him with us than against us!

Definitely true, however, I think Colon will be commanding a
much higher price tag than Hentgen, and hitting is where we
need a lot more help than pitching. If we land only one top
level FA (and I'd be pretty surpised if we end landed one!)
I'd prefer it be a hitter rather than a pitcher.

I agree that Colon is a far better guy to have, but he's a bad choice for
the Tigers right now, in my view, because he will be v. expensive, will want
a long-term contract, and would sign with a club that has no prospect of
contending any time soon. Hentgen, in contrast, can be signed for one or two
years and will not be all that expensive --- at least that's my guess. I
think the contract length and perhaps $8 million a year difference in price,
is a major factor because if the tigers are willing to spend, they should do
it for guys who can get on base. In addition, there is no chance that Colon
will sign with Detroit, whereas Hentgen might (not an easy sign, but you
have a chance at least).

Well, bringing the price on Colon up isn't altogether a bad
idea. It will force the spending team to commit more limited
resources on one person rather than being able to spend on
others.

The truth of the matter is that there is a semi-set amount of
funds available to hire a semi-set number of free agents out
there. If the Tigers can force someone else to spend $10
million rather than $8 million then that's $2 million less to
out bid the Tigers on a different FA later.
