KANSAS CITY -- How's this for a good week for the Tigers?
They swept the Royals, nearly getting a no-hitter from Armando Galarraga on
Wednesday, and now they have a shot at the first-place White Sox.
Detroit won, 7-1, on Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium, with Galarraga turning
in a brilliant pitching performance. The Tigers took all three games from
Kansas City after going 0-6 against the club earlier this year.
No one on the Royals could figure out Galarraga. He pitched a perfect game
through the first six innings. Only Ross Gload and Joey Gathright came close
to getting hits, and those would've been infield singles.
Finally, David DeJesus ended the opportunity for a perfect game and
no-hitter in the seventh. As the leadoff man, he belted a line drive to
right field for a single. Galarraga never quite recovered. He allowed a walk
to Esteban German and then a single to Jose Guillen that scored DeJesus.
Galarraga did escape out of a one-out bases-loaded jam, however, limiting
the damage to just that one run.
Galarraga didn't come out for the eighth. He went seven innings, giving up
three hits and one walk.
Offensively, the Tigers owned the Royals for the third straight game. They
capitalized against starter Zack Greinke early, scoring two runs in the
first, one in the second and two more in the third. Detroit scored two runs
in the seventh against reliever Horacio Ramirez.
Miguel Cabrera had three RBIs and Magglio Ordonez had two.
The Tigers start their three-game set with the White Sox on Friday in
Detroit.
