If by "bottom feeders," he means teams that don't pay the luxury tax,
then by definition, the Tigers have always been bottom feeders until
this year, when they almost were again. If he means to describe a
category that the 2008 Twins fit in, that neither the 2008 Yankees nor
2008 Tigers do, then it must mean something like: Teams that did
really well on a pretty modest payroll. That would define the Twins
and exclude the other 2. Maybe that's what he meant by "bottom
feeders" or maybe it was something else. Maybe LS would care to
enlighten. Probably not.

Yeah, signing Gerald Laird and Adam Everett and trading for Edwin
Jackson.
WOW! Big time maneuvers. That'll pull them out of the AL central
cellar for sure!
Their starters most recent ERA's (2006, 2007, 2008):
Jackson 5.45, 5.76, 4.42
Bonderman 4.08, 5.01, 4.29
Robertson 3.84, 4.76, 6.35
Willis 3.87, 5.17, 9.38
Verlander 3.63, 3.66, 4.84
They also don't have a proven closer. >> Stay informed about: Tigers, Yankees supporting bottom-feeder teams like the Tw.. |

Plus their pen is still pretty questionable.
My prediction is that the Tigers miss the playoffs again, and Leyland
is shown the door at seasons end.

Leyland is safe, if he leaves it will be of his own accord.

You mean because the organization doesn't see him as the problem, or
just because he is Leyland? I mean, I always think of him as a good
manager, but sometimes he does things that puzzle me (what manager
doesn't?). Are you thiniing it is his skills that will save him? Or
his reputation?

I don't think he's safe. They didn't offer him a contract extension
beyond this season for a reason.
Sure, he could end up somewhere else, or choose to save face
by leaving on his own after this season. But either way, if the Tigs
have another miserable or mediocre season, he's gone after this
one, IMO.
