That's different and I tend to agree with you. D'Wayne Wade and
LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony and maybe Chris Paul are the
young studs in today's game. James, because I'm most familiar with
him, is probably the best player but as a person, IMO, he stinks. The
others are much classier and at least attended some college. Wade
spent 4 years at Marquette.

The other "stars" of the game are Shaquille O'Neal and Allen Iverson
and that's pretty much it in terms of personalities. There are many
very good players including all of the Pistons starters. Dirk
Nowitski of the Mavericks and the starting 5 for the Suns.

It does seem like the fundamentals of basketball have been forgotten.
While some of that is due to guys coming into the NBA early (they now
have a minimum age limit), a lot of that has to do with the coaches
not coaching the fundamentals. It was what Larry Brown did in Detroit
and helped the Pistons win a championship. Maybe only the older
coaches teach that anymore. Guys like George Karl and Hubie Brown
(who is no longer in the NBA).

That's pretty true as well although there's nothing like a spectacular
dunk to bring the house down. I think there are still more players in
the NBA that can't dunk then can but the number than can has increased
dramatically over the years. I think the same is true of homeruns in
baseball.

You're probably right. But in one respect many basketball fans watch
the college game and get to know some of the players, however briefly,
before they are drafted into the pros. This is possible because of
the huge proliferation of college games on TV nowadays.

The early entry problem has been addressed somewhat with the minimum
age limit and the NBDL (National Basketball Development League). It
may take a few years, but I believe those things will eventually have
a positive effect on the game.

I've followed baseball and the Tigers (and NY/SF Giants) nearly all of
my life. As a young kid I'd listen to the games at night on my
transistor radio and then when we could afford a TV, I watched the
Saturday games (usually the Cubs where I lived). I've been to many
games in many different parks, usually all Tiger games. I've even
been to some AA and AAA games as well. So, I can say from my
perspective that the game is NOT made for TV. While you're at the
game, you get a feeling for what's going on. There's an ambiance at
the ball park that doesn't translate over TV. Listening to the game
on the radio with a skilled announcer like Ernie Harwell, you get a
sense of being at the game. Look at how many people bring radios to
the game so they can hear and watch. But for whatever reason, those
things do not come across on TV. Sure the World Series and playoff
games bring their own built in excitement but everyday games just
don't always live up to that.

In my opinion, the failure of baseball on TV lies at the feet of MLB
and the announcers. MLB has no time limit. Pitchers and hitters can
stall a pitch for what seems like an eternity. This is not exciting.
Sitting there watching on TV a regular nine inning game that can take
over 3 hours is not exciting. I could even forgo some excitement if
the announcers were skilled in keeping it at least interesting. But
too many of them drone on and on about some point they made four
innings ago. Boring! To tell the truth, the only announcers I can
tolerate on TV now are John Miller and Joe Morgan. Tony Gwynn I think
will eventually become a very good color guy, but he's not there yet.
And I can't stand Joe Buck. Don't like him doing football either. I
liked his dad, but he's not worthy to stand in senior's shadow.

Bob Costas, with the right color guy, isn't too bad. And another guy
they could throw off TV and I'd never miss is Tim McCarver. And he's
paired with Joe Buck a lot, so for me it's a double whammy.

Well, I'll agree that watching on TV is very different from being there,
but, for me, it still works. TV can give you a lot of insight you don't get
being at a game. HOWEVER, as for the slow aspects, well, I've ALWAYS wished
that TV would cover the game more in the manner that I watch while being at
a game. For instance, a foul ball is fielded by the ballboy/girl down in
foul territory. No harm in showing us the fan he/she gives the ball to. That
IS more interesting than seeing the hitter yet again adjust his batting
gloves, spit and grab his crotch...
p.s. I like Joe Buck. IMO, he has just the right amount of irreverence.
Don't like Joe Morgan. Agree with you on McCarver.

True dat... True dat....

Internet prices are a little ridiculous with Comcast though. I've been
thinking about looking elsewhere or at least threaten to cancel if they
can't match... Ever try that?

Tell ya what (and I know this from people who have had other services); when
it come to internet, no one else has the speed and reliability of Comcast.
Be sure you listen to them DSL commercials carefully. "Fastest internet
***for the price***." Comcast doesn't offer a $14.95 because they ain't that
slow.

You got that right. I've had my Comcast cable modem since December of '98.
In all those years, I've lost my connection just a couple of times.
Though I did just order DirecTV to replace my cable TV.
I'm keeping the cable modem though. They'll have to pry that from my dead
cold hands.

Comcast also has a 2GB/month limit on newsgroup downloads. That is not
acceptable to me. That's about 3 audiobooks not to mention mp3 albums.
So for me it would be the asking price plus $14.95/month for newsserver
access. If they get rid of that limit I would get rid of DSL and go to
cable instantly.

Now to be a lurker on topic, is Placido on a tear or what? Man, can he
hit. Nice to see Shelton hit too. I don't remember seeing Shelton play
anywhere but 1st base, does he?

many, if not most, ISPs don't offer newsgroup access at all. and hey, those
MP3 ""albums"" are illegal anyway.
