Teixeira to Atlanta?

The Yankees never seemed too deep into the Mark Teixeira chase, and
now there are indications Texieria is headed to Atlanta.

The Texas Rangers are said -- by an official of a third team who asked
not to be identified because he was discussing another club's players
-- to be "close" to sending Teixeira (their star first baseman) and
lefty C.J. Wilson to the Braves for switch-hitting catcher Jarrod
Saltalamacchia, minor-league shortstop Elvis Andrus and a minor-league
pitcher.

I heard the same thing this morning. That's a pretty good package for
Texas if they've decided they want to trade him.

Maybe...unless they trade for him for the push this season and then
trade him again if he won't sign an extension this winter or next year
before the break. He'll always be a tradable commodity with his
ability.

Atlanta, or any other team, needs to sign Teixeira to an extension to
justify giving up the prospects.

Personally I wouldn't trade Salty straight up for Teixeira let alone
throwing in Andrus as part of the package. I don't see Wilson as more
than a good LOOGY. However, the Braves management probably feels
differently after missing the postseason last year.

Because you'd keep Saltalamacchia, or because you'd trade him for
something else/more? You know I think very highly of him, but I also
think Teixeira is a hell of a ballplayer.

I think you could get more without worrying about possibly
depreciating the value of Teixeira (value diminishes as FA looms).
Teixeira is a fine hitter but I'm not sure if he's an elite level one
(Ortiz, Pujols, Manny prior to this season) as his numbers away from
Texas are very good but not spectacular. I think it's my bias toward
Salty who probably will well hit enough to play 1B while backing up at
C. I'd be looking for either strength-up-the-middle types (SS-2B-CF)
or a young established pitcher who is already a good no.2 with
potential to be a no.1 (cf Chien-Ming) for a playoff team. I still
think 1B are more readily available in the FA market and you have to
try to peddle a top catching prospect for something more substantial.
