Prior to tonight, Tatis was 9 for his previous 40 at bats. Where were
your 'Team Tatis' posts then?

I didn't say that. You're ripping somebody because they didn't think
it would last. I pointed out it didn't last. Logic dictates that
riding Tatis as long as he hits is a smart move. Expecting him to
continue to rediscover 1999, particularly past this season, is not
necessarily a good gamble. Hopefully Church will make a contribution
before the season is over. At that point, it would make sense to see
Murphy and Church against righties and Tatis and Evans against lefties.

The season is more than 40 at bats. Overall, you'd rather not have him here?

Hi Jonathan,

Some of us have been confident that Tatis would continue to hit. More
reason to believe that, IMO, than to believe the converse. Of course
any player is liable to hit rough patches; a couple 'slumps' are
expected, and Tatis has had a few. But he keeps rebounding.

As far as the 9 for 40 stretch, that's still not abysmal. Mets have a
lot of players in the .250 area: Schneider, Delgado, Evans, A. Reyes.
Beltran at .270 (he has probably had his share of batting slumps in
the 9 for 40 range, if not worse.)

Another plus: Tatis has had a ton of clutch hits. He doesn't seem to
lock up in tight spots.

jonathan,

Not ripping you! (Although I ripped Fat Francesa) <g>

It's just that with all the negativity these days generated by talk radio
and trolls, it makes it hard to enjoy the unexpected (re: Tatis). Of course,
it would be great if Murphy turned out to be "special" (so far he seems like
it), but you can't knock Tatis's effort this year. After all, there's only a
month and a half left, and he's been a bright spot - especially when you
factor in the Church has been gone for a longer period of time than there is
season left.

Everything about Murphy, including his minor league track record,
indicates he will hit. He may never hit for big power, but the plate
discipline has always been there, and that's an excellent start. I
personally don't think his future is in the outfield, and I would love
the Mets to consider him as a first base possibility for next year.
Many minor league third basemen (Jeff Bagwell, Kevin Youkilis, Jim
Thome, etc.) become good first basemen, especially in Murphy's case
where he's never been regarded for his defense. My only question is
how much power he will hit for, but he's only 23, and his power has
increased at each level, which is a very good sign and suggests he's
filling out and learning to drive the ball more. In that way, he's
very similar to David Wright who demonstrated the same power growth
through the minors. He's even shown a good approach against lefties.
Unlike a lot of these 'athletes' the Mets have tried in recent years
(Argenis Reyes, Anderson Hernandez, Angel Pagan, etc.), I like
watching an actual baseball player come out of the farm system.

Not that I'm not surprised (pleasantly) by what he's done this year, but
if you look at his career, what he's doing this year is not that far out
of line with what he's done before.

Besides 1999, he still had 2 other years where he hit 15+ HR. His career
OPS is 789. This year he is well above that at 850, but he's had 2
other seasons besides 1999 where he exceeded 850 (870 and 872). So he's
hit at this level before more than once, even though he's had an
up/down career.

By the same token though, he's had some invisible years, and if he did
that next year, that would also be consistent with his career. So best
to take advantage of it now while it lasts....and get a good look at the
young guys (Evans and Murphy) in the process.
