Tavares seems to have thrown in the towel, despite raising our hopes
with an offer to Vlad at the end of the season, he has withdrawn it.
Given that the rumoured amounts are as good as what anyone else seems to
be willing to spend, I don't see why.

From a story on the official website Monday:
_____
Part of next year's budget most likely will not include outfielder
Vladimir Guerrero, who is a free agent. Tavares said that the Expos made
an offer to Guerrero, but the proposal was taken off the table right
after the World Series.

"We made a very substantial offer to him twice before the season ended
and really did not receive any kind of response other than, 'We want to
see what the market has to offer.' As a result of that, we ended up
pulling our offer right after the World Series," Tavares said. "I don't
think we are a player at this point and time."

You know there are rumours that Vazquez will go to the Yankees as early as
maybe this week for Nick Johnson and Juan Rivera...the NY media is
speculating that the money that Minaya saves from trading Vazquez and losing
Vlad will be used to woo Juan Gonzalez here...since Juan will not command
the kind of money Vlad will...if this is true then a lineuo of Wilks,
Rivera, Gonzalez, Johnson, Vidro and Cabrera looks might nice right now....I
hat to see Vazquez go but I really like Johnson and if Juan signs then we
are looking OK...the next step is starting pitching...we need to replace
Vazquez...Armas, Day and Livan look good but we need another solid starter
in the rotation

I can't believe that to be 100% true. I'm positive that if Guerrero wasn't
signed by the start of spring training they'll come back and looking for a
deal. I can't bring myself to think that they wouldn't offer Vlad a one year
deal just so that he can have a monster year and then get his rich deal from
some other team.

ESPN is reprting that Vazquez deal is done pending a contract extension...as
for Vlad they have to offer him arbitration by Sunday I think...maybe teams
know that they cannot afford to offer him arbitrationa and sign him to 15-17
million so they will wait till Sunday and then sign him so asnot lose any
draft picks...whatever they do there is no way Vlad plays here next year....

I remember Vlad missing a pretty significant chunk of this season....

Face it, no one is beating down Guerrero's door right now. Where is he going
to turn if no one wants to pay him what he wants? Do you believe the Expos
would turn him away? I for one don't. And if they do, Minaya and Tavares
better hope that the fans never ever find out.

I read that the Expos paid Vlad $10.5 million last year and that the
team had offered him $75 million for five years, which he TURNED
DOWN!!!

Firstly, I don't know where the hell they'd find this kind of money to
throw around. Secondly, I heard that he's looking for around $18-19
million per year.

Let's think about this.....can you imagine what's going on in his head
right now...."How the hell can I make ends meet on $15 million? Is
this Expos management insane? A-Rod must have realized that real
estate and Bentley prices keep going up and up he just wanted to make
sure he didn't get caught short. I'd better prepare for the leaner
years after I retire - NO WAY, CHEAP BASTARD EXPOS!!!"
