Jerry went by the numbers. Schneider is not the sexy pick by any
stretch of the imagination but his numbers are far better than
Santana's. Post All-Star Break he's hitting .263 with a .348 OBP. In
August specifically he's hitting .353 with a .450 OBP.
Santana is barely a .151 hitter with a .196 OBP for the year. For a
pitcher he is a good hitter. But even Schneider is a better choice in
that situation. Now hindsight sees that Schneider did nothing...yet
so did Santana going 0-3 for the game. So in either case, the spot is
wasted.
Now granted, the question comes down to do you trust your bullpen.
For me that answer is still no. But Jerry's way of thinking is
obvious. The bullpen he has isn't going anywhere, he rather have them
pitch through what ever is going on in their heads, than to never use
them.
In either case, your going to need the bullpen down the stretch.
Using them against a bad hitting Nationals team seems like a good idea
to get them out of their funk, and for at least one night it has.
