I had tickets to a Rockies vs. Giants game this weekend, so I loaded up
the car with the Smokey Joe grill, cooler full of beer, and a couple
lawn chairs and headed over to the Coors Field parking lot about two
hours before game time. To my dismay, the parking attendant noticed as
we setup lawn chairs and came over to say that GRILLING IS NOT PERMITED
IN THE COORS FIELD PARKING LOTS!!
WHAT MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAM DOES NOT ALLOW TAILGATING!?!
TAILGATING IS JUST AS SIGNIFICANT AN AMERICAN PAST TIME AS BASEBALL
ITSELF!!
So we left the bratwursts in the cooler and settled for a couple of
beers and some chips as we watched fan after fan park their vehicle,
get out, and walk towards the gates.
Now let me clarify... I am originally from Wisconsin where tailgating
is the life blood of the state. Most Wisconsites would not even dare
think about going to a Brewers, Packers, or Badgers game without taking
the Weber grill along!!
Still in disbelief the day after the game, I visited the Rockies
website to find the following: "Tailgating is not permitted in any
Rockies operated parking lot. Persons may not consume alcohol in the
parking lots, including inside their vehicles."
It seems counterintuitive to me for a professional baseball team to ban
tailgating. What are the Rockies thinking? Tailgating rallies the
fans together as they celebrate the home team and get into the spirit
of the game!
What am I missing here? Has anyone else run into this? Is there any
way around it? Are there other parking lots in that allow fans to
partake in the great american pastime of tailgating?
