Sorry to say YES it is time to dump some people and tool up for next year
this year was a fluke to me way over there heads they need some hitting and
guys to get on base to many dam K's in this lineup to really compete but the
good news is just 1 or 2 key moves could put them in a serious run for next
year and clear out some of the dead

Right. Sure. They're two games out of first place in their division, so
let's write off the year. In fact, let's have a policy that, in the future,
if they're not 25 games over .500 at the All Star break, they concede the
season.

The Cubs are two games out of first, yet they would be no better than
5th in the other two divisions. They are only 8-1/2 games out of last
in their own division. The Cubs have been in decline for more than
three weeks and the starting pitching has been severely abused with high
pitch counts. I expect that the pitching that has carried the Cubs thus
far this year will begin deteriorating. The GM shows no sign of being
able to make any sort of move to bolster the team. The least he could
do is cut Lenny Harris. Hernandez for Bellhorn has been a plus so far
(relatively speaking), but I think Bellhorn was capable of such a streak
himself.

I hope that Hendry has learned at least one thing this year and that is
to not overpay for a "closer" again. Borowski proves that many adequate
middle relievers can make the move to closer and be as effective as
anyone who currently has the title. Having written this, I have
probably cursed Joe to be totally ineffective for the remainder of the
season.

The Cubs have been in the playoffs three times since 1945. Why would
you expect Cub fans to react any differently to a pattern of play we
have seen repeatedly over the years? I think the Cubs still have a
chance, but time is running out and it is going to take a major trade or
two to get them over the hump. Based on what Hendry has shown us in the
past season and a half, I don't think he has the experience to get that
done yet.

I don't necessarily disagree with any of this, but that doesn't mean that
I'm going to agree with suggestions that we should write off the whole year
before the All Star break. The simple fact is that the Cubs are only a few
roster moves from being as competitive as anyone else, and as the trading
deadline approaches, I have to believe that they will make some good moves.

I wouldn't know. I don't have access to Hendry's every move. I'm just
grateful that Ed Lynch is gone.

True. I don't understand that one. I can only assume that he doesn't want
to go to battle with Baker over it, but Baker needs to understand who
answers to whom, and the sooner he learns it, the better.

I don't know. On top of his problems on the field, I've read several
suggestions that Bellhorn had become a problem in the clubhouse. If true,
that is not a good combination.

You'd better say something really complimentary about Isringhausen and
Wagner to even things out a little bit...

Time will tell. The Cubs potential this year is much too high and they
have accomplished much too much to give up on this year, though. I am not
one to say that we should give up the future in order to win now, but I'm
also not going to go to the other extreme by saying that we should write
off this year and rebuild for... when?

Yep. I never bought into all of the hype when he first came to town, and
now that he's proving to be as fallible as anyone else, I'm not ready to
write him (or the team and the year) off as beyond salvage, either.

It is a LONG season and a lot will still happen, and there is still plenty
of time to make the few minor roster changes that will help them in the
second half.
