Doesn't look good at this point at all.

Good time for the All Star break.

You must have posted this after the first half inning..

Yep. I'm glad we ended this series with a win, we've got four more against
the Giants coming up a week from Monday.

With a bunch of tough roster calls to make by then (or thereabouts):

Junior Spivey - likely ready to go Thursday; could take a few extra days if
it's decided his role with the big club might take him to right field.

Tony Womack - ready to go Thursday; could be dealt or let go instead.

Randy Johnson - barring unexpected swelling in the repaired knee, pencilled
in to go Sunday.

Bret Prinz - very near a return to the club, at last report; could be back
as soon as he satisfies team medical personnel of his physical soundness.

Mike Koplove - throwing in the bullpen under the watch of major league
staff; if he responds well to increased work, could be a week-to-ten-days
away.

Rod Barajas - wrist not getting any better, but not getting any worse; if he
can play with the pain, he could be back as soon as next weekend (when he's
eligible); if he can't, it's the end of his year.

Lotsa guys on the Will-Be/Could-Be Back list; it's a cinch that Terrero and
Raggio are gone, but there are a lot of question marks after that....

Well, he could have mean that it didn't look good for the sweep since he's a
Giants fan as per his posts in their newsgroup. No big deal.

Curt sure was rusty, wasn't he? I don't think I ever saw him get as
flustered as he did at one point after he'd hit Bonds. The 3rd base thing
where he ran over Cruz on the base path.... he just wasn't thinking. The
way he stayed on the ground, I thought maybe he'd separated his shoulder.
He was definitely dinged. He should have stayed down until after the break,
if possible.

Well, I haven't seen enough of Williams to know how good he is, but it's
clear that Willis is getting entirely too much press relative to Williams
and Webb. Based solely on media hype, Willis is a runaway lock to be
Rookie of the Year at this point, but based on actual results, Webb looks
tough to beat and Williams deserves to be seriously considered.

Schilling =was= ready; the only reason he (and Unit) went through the
two-or-three-start rehab process was to stretch out and get ready to throw a
starter's workload. Curt ran into a red-hot club, and it hardly seemed to
matter for the first nineteen innings the DBacks pitched who was on the
mound.

Randy is set to stretch to eighty-five or ninety pitches this start. His
command has been only slightly off, but should get tighter with more work.

Why the "rush"? My answer is another question: Why delay? If a guy is
physically ready to do the work for which the big club is paying him, why
shouldn't he be doing it for that big club?

And another question: Is it really a "rush"? Schilling was on rehab for two
weeks; by the time Unit returns Sunday, he'll have been on rehab for about
two weeks. Even the position guys will have put in close to two weeks on
assignment by the time the break ends in San Diego on Thursday; what will
have been left untested in those two weeks that would merit more time spent
in the sticks rather than in The Show?

One columnist I read this weekend -- I want to say it was from the LA Times,
but I can't say that with certainty -- tabbed Scootin' Scott Podsednik, of
all people, as his RotY pick. ("Scott Podsednik".... shouldn't he be on a
team with "Frank Furshlugginner"? Somewhere, Harvey Kurtzman is laughing his
ass off. Smile

Others doing midyear award-giving have tabbed the likes of Houston's Brad
Lidge and (improbably) Atlanta's Horacio Ramirez (the luckiest pitcher this
side of Chris George).

Anyhow, it's hardly the slam-dunk for Willis that certain people in the FOX
baseball hierarchy were so certain of, just a few short weeks ago....
