I was watching the minor league allstar game, and they showed Rob
Stratton winning the HR contest. He's out of bball, but it seems
that they allow former guys to come and give the HR contest a go.
I'd never seen him before. He's a Big Boy.

It's another little thing I think MLB misses the boat on in trying to
promote the game and add excitement. They should have their best
sluggers compete, not just allstars. It's a different skill. The
lamest of all time was probably last year, where they had to scrape to
find enough foreigners to fill the field. Jason Bay should never ever
take the field in such a contest.

I've thought for years that the HR contest should by law always
include Dunn, Wily Mo, and Richie Sexton. Hafner and Garko would be
exciting current additions as well. Hell of a lot better idea than
Selig's stupid "it counts" bullshit.

Howard was in it this year even though he wasn't an allstar, so do you
think Dunn just turns them down, or they've never asked?

Howard was there to defend his title. Who wants to watch Dunn swing and
miss in the derby?

Ryan Howard:

Year AB SO
+--------------+---+-
2005 312 100 (32%)
2006 581 182 (31%)
2007 254 96 (38%)

Ryan Howard has struck out 33% of the time in his career and is much
worse this year.

Adam Dunn has struck out 33% of the time for his career, 34% this
year which is actually LESS than Howard.

It takes 5 decimal points to find the difference between Howards K
percentage (0.32883) vs Dunn's ( 0.32887). Don't think anyone
would quibble if I said they K at basically the same rate.

Yet, I don't recall Howard swinging and missing during the contest
either year.

So I'd guess to answer your question, no one, but I'd bet they'd like
to watch Howard go head to head with Dunn.

Howard was there to defend his title. My comments on Dunn were joking
comments.
