The Cubs are not .500 and of all games to date this year, today is the
biggest one to date. They are 5 games down (6 in the loss column) with 17 to
play. But they still have a lot of destiny in their hands, they have 7 games
remaining with Houston and a series with Milwaukee who hold a 1/2 game over
them. Florida has a killer schedule down the stretch having to play all the
contenders here on out, including Houston (2 more games), but also Phila,
Washington, NY and Atlanta.

That said the Cubs are almost dead and I thought they were back in early
August. Yet stranger things have happened in sports and they are hot (again)
having won 9 of 12. At 72-73 the Cubs need to go 14-3 here on out (96-76)

That would mean that to tie with Houston the Astros would have to go 10-8
(not inconceivable) and Florida would have to go 8-9, also a real
possiblility, Phila would have to go 9-8 again realistic and Washington
12-5, which is more realistic than 14-3 but a mad rush.

What this means is that the Cubs could still tie for the WC playoff spot
without having a leader collapse. 14-3 is a historic finish, and would be a
23-6 September, but there are teams that have done this, didn't Houston do
something similar last year?

The Cubs are sold out for the rest of the year. Why does the
personification of the Tribune insist on pretending that the Cubs still
have more than a sliver of a chance. If the Cubs DO make the
playoffs, it makes it a virtually certainty that the idiot will get an
extension and the Cubs will continue to fight and struggle to make the
playoffs with a team that should cruise into the playoffs.

If the Marlins keep winning, it will be over by next week.

There is no possible way the Cubs win 96 games. Smile

Aren't you forgetting that 10-game fest the Cubs scheduled against the
Pirates on one of their off days? Most GMs are so preoccupied
with trying to acquire extra players down the stretch, they
overlook the option of adding extra games. Kudos to Hendry.

P.S. Baker is positively drooling at the pitch count possibilities.

I think I insinuated that saying they had to go 8-9 here on out while
playing contenders back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back

Florida has won 6 out their last 10, and that translates to 10-7 and would
still mean the final weekend until it is over.

Another way to think is that the Marlins have a magic number of 11 for a tie
and 12 for an elimination of the Cubs, the Astros are 12 and 13
respectively, unless the Cubs go into a losing streak it won't be in a week.

If the Cubs close the regular season 14-3, and then win 10
post-season games, Cubs fans will be hoping the team doesn't stop at 96
wins.

Hey I'd love for that loophole to prove me wrong. I'd be happy with 96
wins leaving them only 2 short of the WS crown. I'd prefer they finish
the season 84-78 and win 96 for the year. Smile

I can see it now. The Cubs are up 3 games on the Astros and we get swept in
the last 4 games at Houston to lose by 1. The team is leading by 3 runs in
the bottom of the 9th with Zambrano pitching. The ump calls a ball on
Biggio and Carlos goes ballistic and hits the ump. Baker brings in Mitre
who serves up a grand slam. We lose and goats everywhere hee-haw.

LOL. I was at the bar today and mentioned that this was a must win when
the Cubs were down 7-4 in the 10th inning against the lowly Reds and
they all wanted to kill me. Smile

Woe us Cub fans for we are so pathetic!

Give it up, this season is over.
