Stanford pushed across two runs in the bottom of the eighth
and David O'Hagan ran his season record to 6-1 in relief as
the Cardinal edged the Trojans 5-4. The winning run scored
after John Hester's double to deep right center. Sam Fuld
singled up the middle to drive in pinch-runner Chris Lewis
with the tying run. The ball got by the center fielder for
a three-base error and the winning run.
The game was sloppy with Stanford committing three errors
and USC two. Stanford's pitching seems to have recovered
from the 9-3 shellacking they took Friday night, but the
hitting is still in a slump. I lost count of the LOB for
Stanford but it seemed like every other inning there was at
least one runner in scoring position with less than two outs
who failed to even be advanced, much less score.
How long before Mark Marquess decides to give junior C Donny
Lucy some time off and replace him with sophomore John
Hester. Between his pinch-hit today and his two hits
Tuesday night he's currently looking like a much better
addition to the lineup. Lucy, by contrast, is mired in a
horrible slump, striking out looking twice today.
Rubber game Sunday. I'll be there. - Tony
