The Washington Nationals may go down in baseball history as one of the
greatest spoilers of all time. I suppose we must share the honor with the
Florida Marlins, and I'm wondering if anyone can recall a similar finish in
the past.

To think that the Nats and the Fish have been in a race of their own - to
stay out of last place! I believe the Nats clinched 4th place in the NL
East yesterday, so that race is over.

Can anyone else think of other teams that have had so much of an impact on
the first and second place teams in their division this late in a season?

Post it here! I'm interested.

The only time I can recall a turnaround this major was in 1964, but I don't
recall that there was any one or two teams that were responsible for it. It
was just blamed as a collapse on the part of the Phillies.

Well, at least we can say that we watched the New York Mets eclipse the 1964
Phillies as the team with the most horrible collapse at the end of a season
(and I'm sure that there are plenty of Phillies fans who are happy to have
that happen).

Think about this: We've seen an awful lot of history out of New York
baseball lately. First, the 2004 Yankees won the first three games of the
ALCS, then choked away four games in a row to the Red Sox and end Boston's
"curse." Now we get to see the Mets collapse at the end of the 2007 season
and bury the memories of the 1964 Phillies.

I propose that this is indisputable proof that there is a God in heaven!

I notice that no one who's talked about the 1964 collapse has mentioned that
it's the Phillies that have capitalized on this years' collapse.
