with 5 in the 1st but Caleb Clay gave back a quick 3 in the bottom of the
1st before settleing down into a nice grove. This is Clay's first pro
experience. (same for half the team) Sidenote: the Spinners list 7 players
foreign born - the (Houston) Valley Cats one from P.R.. We had 1 Australian,
1 from Panama, 2 from Venezueala, and 3 from the D.R. Plus one coach from
the D.R. and one from Canada. PLUS - a trainer from Japan !!! The Spinners
did a lot more running than Sox teams of the past. A lot of very nice
fielding plays on both teams. One of the Valley Cat hitters had a funny
batting form - left the bat on his shoulder until he started his swing -
drove me nuts. I am surprised coaches leave him do that. Nice little park,
nice weather, nice fans.

I was always taught to, with my swing, to leave the bat on my shoulder
to concentrate more on the pitcher. I found that it helped, as
everything was still and you could see the ball better. It also helped
to keep the bat up and start my swing from the right spot.

How did Clay look? He's kind of a forgotten man among the recent high
draft picks (he was a supplemental #1 last year), mainly because they
shut him down after he signed last year, and he didn't make a
full-season squad this spring. But he's supposed to have really good
stuff and plenty of potential.

Did you happen to notice if a kid named Tyler Weeden caught or DH'd?
He's supposed to be a big power-hitting prospect. He was an
"unsignable" guy in last year's draft, but Boston took him in the 16th
round, gave him decent money, and got him in the fold.

There's also an outfielder named Carlos Fernandez, who Red Sox
prospect fans really liked last year, but wasn't ranked that highly by
national experts, and flopped in low-A this year. He was sent to
Lowell to get his groove back.

The remainder of the team seems to be the usual mix of newcomers and
sleepers, some of whom will turn into prospects, and the rest of whom
will be paying for tickets like the rest of us in a few years.

Control looked good - the couple times I lokked at the gun it said 91 - they
hit the ball hard off him in the 1st but nothing after that.

They list 3 catchers - Weeden, Milano and Lewis. Both Weeden and Milano
swung the bat in the top of the first but Lewis replaced Weeden in the
bottom of the inning and caught. Not sure what happened to Weeden. There
was a crash play at the plate when the Spinners were batting but I don't
know if Weeden was the runner or not. His single was a bloop to center.

Carlos Fernandez-**Oliva** could have a good blood line. Single ground ball
up the middle, double to right center gap, and safe on E6 that could easily
been scored a hit.

Interesting - I never noticed it before - and it just seemed like he left it
there too long.

Is he still using "Fernandez-Oliva?" I thought he finally dumped the
second name. (Maybe he's the illegitimate son of Giselle Fernandez
and Tony Oliva?)

Thanks.. we appreciate your comments.. they made a nice comeback to
make a laugher interesting towards the end.. i think it's gonna be a
long season, though. 4,500 for a monday night is a pretty good crowd
for single A short season ball, no?

skank (who was there last night too, though rooting for his beloved
'Cats)

The announcer used just Fernandez but both names appear on the team roster
sheet.

The Cats made some nice plays. We were in sect 160 and the guy who sang the
National Anthem sat next to us. Great crowd - I was really surprised.
