The rationale for having a contact hitter batting second is that you
can hit and run if the leadoff man gets on. I agree with Earl Weaver
that the hit and run is the worse play in baseball. If you're not
going to hit and run, having a contact hitter in the second spot is
irrelevant.
The advantage of having Soriano bat first or second, rather than
fifth, is that he gets more plate appearances. You want your best
hitters getting the most chances to hit.
