| A minor injury to Soriano could be a great opportunity for the team to bring up Pie to play centerfield and, move Soriano to rightfield upon his return if Pie hits well enough to remain at the Major League level. He certainly has the fielding ability and would improve the outfield defense.

Wait a minute now, lets think about this for a bit. Jones in center,
Murton in right and Floyd in left
This could be history in the making. We could be witnessing one of the
all time great defensive outfields.

For some reason my recollection of Sauer is that he was a decent
fielder. Don't know why but thats just what pops into my mind when
I hear his name...
Anyway, I'm curious to see what Jones looks like in centerfield. If he
doesn't
cover a LOT of ground out there I feel very sorry for our pitchers. I
also have
this picture in my head of runners merrily taking extra bases anytime
the ball
goes his way.
On the plus side, maybe we'll get to see a line up of Theriot leading
off and
Murton hitting second. I've want to see that combination since the end
of
last season.

You're probably not old enough to remember that great defensive outfield of
Sauer, Kiner, and Baumholtz. Every ball hit to the outfield made it seem
like the game went into slow motion. However, all those guys, though slow
and not blessed with good arms, were fairly sound in fundamentals and could
hit the cut-off man. >> Stay informed about: Soriano Injury... |

He was a decent fielder with an average arm. He was just slow, and couldnt
get to balls a faster fielder would. >> Stay informed about: Soriano Injury... |

I am old enough to remember Dave Kingman in left, Jerry Martin in
center and Mike Vail in right, though. Yuck.

He probably caught more Tobacco Boxes then baseballs. But Hammering Hank
was a pretty fine power hitter and with kiner in right, they kept old
Frankie lean and mean. >> Stay informed about: Soriano Injury... |

Looks like the Murton | Jones position shift is part of a long-term plan to play Soriano in leftfield and play Pie in center. Jones is probably the odd man out. I'm not sure what will happen to Floyd? However, Pie and Murton could also platoon in right while Floyd plays left until Pie proves that he can hit at the major league level. Either way, Jones is likely to be gone upon Soriano's return.

If that scenario is correct, it looks like Floyd is without a position until
Jones is traded or Pie is sent back down. >> Stay informed about: Soriano Injury... |
