Didn't he once say something to the effect that he'd retire if he ever
needed another surgery?

I should've read down before posting. Yes, this is my recollection too.

I think some reassurance that he's in the Hall (which I think he is now) and
he hangs it up.

We can argue till the cows come home ($1 to Elvin Bishop) whether or not
he deserves it, but much of the media seems like it's a foregone
conclusion at this point. While watching ESPN this morning, Stephen A.
Smith matter of factly called him a Hall of Famer, and Skip Bayless
one-upped him by calling him a 1st Ballot Hall of Famer.

Now I'm not a big fan of either of these guys, but I think they probably
generally represent the sports media. Looks like the Big 3 probably all
get in. As Maddux is wont to say, "that's cool."

And keep in mind that shoulders are different from elbows. The
sawboneses have shown an ability to fix elbows, sometimes better than
new. But shoulders are a different thing entirely. I had
reconstructive shoulder surgery in the spring of 1992, and I've come
to the conclusion that it will never be right.

But are you suggesting it's not as clear cut in your mind?

No, I think he's in too, though not necessarily on the first ballot
(especially if that ballot includes Maddux, Glavine and Martinez).

I'm more conservative on the HOF than most, but as long as they're
letting people in who I don't think deserve it, I'll root for every
Brave possible to make it. Mark Lemke? You go, boy! Bruce Benedict?
Careful carrying that HOF trophy! Dale Murphy? I hope it doesn't
embarrass you when they name the HOF after you!

In short, while I find "that's cool" when a Brave is elected, I really
don't take the HOF (any of them) all that seriously. I'm sure the
players do, though, and since Smoltz is one of my all-time favorites,
I'd be very happy for him. He's such a class act, just watching him
today in his press conference made me proud to be a Braves fan. He's
pretty much the exact opposite of the stereotypical spoiled pro athlete.

Don't forget Randy Johnson. It's not unlikely that this is his last
year too.

I'm with Terry on this. I think the HOF is essentially a joke at this
point. I don't like the logic of "if this guy is in then this guy
surely deserves it too" but any Hall that includes Scooter Rizzuto and
anyone who ever shared the bowl of greenies with Joe Morgan hsa not
reasonable floor by which to deny John Smoltz.

Indeed, I forgot about RJ. And if Schilling doesn't pitch this year, then
he'd be on the ballot the preceding year with Clemens. There's a decent
chance neither of them would be elected first ballot - Schilling's not a
first-ballot lock, and Clemens has scandal baggage. And chances are Kevin
Brown's not Hall-bound. So assuming all that, there's a very small chance
that one ballot could feature:
Maddux
Glavine
Smoltz
Clemens
Martinez
Johnson
Schilling
Brown

All you need is a career-ending injury to Mussina this year and you sweep
the most dominant pitchers of our time.

Yeah, I agree with all of this. Smoltz is a class act and perhaps our family
favorite (including mother-in-law) since his first season.
