It was hard for me to tell from the BB Tonight highlights, as defense
also seemed to play a role. The radar gun seemed to be strong, just
wondering if he just seemed rusty to those watching.

His velocity was good, but the control was not. It looked like he got good
movement, but the pitches that were hit were not in good spots. He said he
was overthrowing because of adreneline.

FWIW, I thought he looked very uncomfortable out there. I confess to
not having seen him pitch much lately, but it sure seemed like he was
trying to avoid grimacing. I assume that at this point every pitch he
throws now hurts, it's just a question of how much.

His stuff looked good: the fastball had screwball action against right
handers which looked very effective.

I think we've seen that before when he's come back from injuries as well,
the guy gets over-psyched about it. Thanks.

Suprising velocity. Poor location. Everything seemed to trail in to the
right side of the plate -- fine if you keep it down, big trouble if you get
it up. He got most of it up. He also seems to be minus the splitter. I only
saw the 94-95 mph running fastball and perhaps an 84 mph slider. If he is
limited to two pitches, his location is going to have to be pin-point. He
still would have gotten away with a scoreless inning if Blanco had one more
step to catch that sinking liner.

One of the announcers said last night that Smoltz can't throw a splitter
from the new arm angle.

It's hard for me to believe that this can go on for another 4 months. Last
time he was coming back from surgery, this time he's just trying everything
to avoid it, to go out on his own terms.
