Well, Nashville's season ended Friday when they were eliminated from the
playoffs. So, today the Pirates called up five players... only five. They
called up Hill, Duaner Sanchez, Vogelsong, John Grabow, and JJ Davis. Notables
not called up, Cota, Freddy Sanchez, Alvarez, and Dave Williams.

Williams, Cota & Sanchez packed it in for the year even before the end of
Nashville's season. Alvarez had a great last month of the season once he
began to play consistently. He also played well during the playoffs.
Nevertheless, Littlefield and company appear to have something against
Alvarez, so the early conclusion of his year is not wholly a surprise. If
Alvarez is lucky, and I would suspect he wont be lucky, Littlefield will
included him in a trade this winter. Alvarez now appears to lack a future
with the Pirates.

As for the call-ups, McClendon has already indicated that only Davis will
get starts in Pittsburgh. The reason: He wants to win games. It was this
kind of thinking that led McClendon to pinch-hit for Alvarez last season.
Alvarez already had a few hits, one of which was a home run. The
pinch-hitter McClendon sent in for Alvarez: Nunez!

Isn't Freddy Sanchez hurt? I think I remember hearing that would be a
reason for him not being called up...
