Does a pinch runner get credit for scoring a run or does it go to
the player who reached base originally?

The PR gets the credit. Whoever actually crosses the plate gets
credit for the run. It's the same if a batter reaches on a fielder's
choice, which is a bigger negative for the team than reaching as a
pinch runner. It isn't fair, but it is accurate; the runner who
actually scores gets credit for a run scored.

Thank you.

I have hundreds of baseball books, including about everything Bill
James has written since 1986, but this was one of those things
that I never really though about until I saw it happen the other
night. I think David Ortiz got on base, left the game and his PR
scored on a homer by Manny. This kind of thing probably happens
all the time. Wonder if Big Papi will score exactly 99 this year?

Thanks again.

Bill James wrote books about statball, not baseball. Huge
difference. The fact that you have a huge library of statbooks and
still not know a damned thing about baseball is not surprising.

ah, yes...the hazards of newsgroup posting.
Thanks for reminding me of all the different types of people out
there. I had forgotten.

Anyone reading your response who knows me personally - as
you do not - will laugh their ass off. The key word in my
response was "including."

I played, managed, and coached it every year in
one form or another for 35 years, but there was (at least) one thing I
was not sure of and I thank Roger Moore for his kind response.

Yeah, I remember this guy hired by Charlie Finley exclusively as a
pinch runner in an effort to stramline the game. Didn't work
out very well. Neither did the orange baseballs. Smile

Different types of people? What on earth are you talking about?

The only things we know about you are what you, yourself, have
written. You told us that you have a great collection of statbooks,
and the nature of your question clearly implies you know nothing
about baseball.

Again, board and computer games are not baseball. Teeball and little
league are not baseball.

In any case, Mr. Moore is one of the people in this ng that would
gleefully agree that most people who play and manage at the very
highest level, don't know a damned thing about the game.

I make a note trying to help you out and you treat me this way?

Bugger off. Don't post here anymore. You are not wanted.

Trivia: back when courtesy runners were allowed, the original player
got credit for the run scored, not the runner.
