SNY is reporting that the Mets have acquired Brian Schneider and Ryan Church
from the Nationals for Lastings Milledge.

We wrote four days ago that the Mets shouldn't part with Milledge for
Schneider. Church, though, helps even it up. The one concern for the Nats is
that a lot of teams are down on Milledge as a center fielder. If they decide
he can't handle the position, they'd probably use him in left and bench Wily
Mo Pena. Austin Kearns in center, with Milledge in right, should be an
option, but manager Manny Acta wasn't willing to go there last season.
Schneider to the Mets means that Johnny Estrada will be non-tendered after
all. The Nats will probably bring in Paul Lo Duca or Michael Barrett until
Jesus Flores is ready.

I've never been a big Milledge booster, but this trade seems pretty good
for us.

Lo Duca would be nice, but I don't see the owners spending the cash on a
catcher. Plus, Flores is ready now. Who will be our back up?

Milledge is 22??? He was there for the 2nd half of the season and in
the minors the 1st half. Transpose his numbers over a full season and
he'd hit .272/20/90 as a 22 year old. His defense is fairly solid
although he's had a few blunders here and there. He has great speed
and a rocket for an arm. You gave up guys that frankly did nothing for
you....the down side is?

Very weak trade. Let's hope FLores is ready. Milledge and Church both hit
272 - Milledge a part time player with 184 AB compared to CHurch's 470 .
CHurch had 15 homers playing at RFK while Milledge had 7. Another Jimbo dud
in my opinion. Schneider a throw in at this point to sweeten the deal.
Good luck Ryan. You had better get a tougher hide if you are going to play
in NY. I guess they are giving up on Escobar in CF.

I hope so, although losing Schneider is really questionable, considering
his impact with the young pitchers coming up and his defense. I'm more
indifferent about Church and the prblem of fitting him into the outfield.
But, the Mets' fans are supposedly furious about this, so at least that's
something.

I hope they've made the decision to start Flores. I don't want to see Lo
Duca, and Barrett is going backward.

Uh, Church was the throw-in according to what I read. Minaya needed a
catcher and LH bats. The only advantage I see is if Flores starts, but I
would have preferred a platoon, which Schneider is probably not ready for.

So, that's what got him in trouble in NY. I didn't read any details, but
the Nats seem attracted to giving player's second chances after they screw
up.

Wait until you see how it plays out. Nats owed Schnieder $8M over the next
couple of seasons. Milledge has been billed at the next greatest whatever
for the last three years. The untouchable Met in the chain. Guess they
gave up on him after watching for a half of a season figured he wasn't
untouchable anymore. I see in another posting the Milledge quote
"everybody was against me". Did we trade one head case for another? Time
will tell on this deal. Take the money and run Stan.

Yeah, the headcase part about Church wore very thin on me. He'd just
better not slump in NY and get all pouty on the bench, as is his nature.
Milledge likes Acta so that's in his favour to grow up a little. If he
gets his chance to live up to his potential, then I suppose losing Schneider
won't be so bad.

Milledge should get that chance here in DC. There is no media microscope
here in Washington compare to NY. This guy Svrluga from the Post doesn't
understand the first thing about baseball so if he can smile and not tie his
shoes together he'll be OK from a scrutiny standpoint.

In the Red Sox group, there was a post from CalC in the "Church Traded"
thread that noted some fan friendly anecdotes about Milledge in the minors,
where he went out of his way to sign autographs for kids.
One of the slams against him was high-fiving fans when he returned to the
outfield after his first major league homer (in the 9th that sent the game
into extras) that rubbed the veterans on the team the wrong way. For a young
guy to get beat up in the press over that is ridiculous.

That is BS if true. Young guy, 1st HR, hell, have fun. With Church gone,
we now have 3 RH OFs. 4 is you count Nook, the alleged SH, who they won't
let hit LH.

Yeah, it sounds like he got a bad rap in NYC, but he is the guy that tossed
his bat into an ump in the minors. All in all, I suspect he'll be a model
