Post subject: A baseball question from Saturday's Giants v Cardinals game
Archived from groups: uk>sport>baseball (more info?)

Saturday's Giants v Cardinals game was a good one if you are a Giants
fan. In the first inning the Giants scored 8 runs and the Cardinals
pitcher (Morris) was removed. Morris threw 50+ pitches in just two
thirds of an inning. My question is: What is the record for the most
pitches thrown in one inning or less by a single pitcher?

Fifty pitches is a lot -- about half a game's worth usually -- so it
got me to wondering what the record was for most pitches thrown in one
inning or less. We can look at this several ways. First, we can just
consider the first inning, or we can take any inning in the game,
excluding games that go extra innings and all but one pitcher has been
relieved.

Several factors might enter into leaving a pitcher in to throw so many
pitches. Here are a couple:

1. The pitcher could have a good record and so the manager hopes he
will snap out of it.

2. The team could be ahead by a few runs thus being able to afford the
luxury of waiting for the pitcher to "right" himself.

I suspect there may be other reasons as well. I could find no stats
on this at the baseball almanac site and there may very well be no
records kept of such a thing, but that is doubtful knowing how stats
are valued in baseball.

Anybody got any ideas?
