Archived from groups: alt>sports>baseball>atlanta-braves, others (more info?)

I have waited to comment on the Sammy Sosa corked bat issue for some time
because I wanted to see how it played out in the media.

I was appalled to see that Sosa was using a corked bat. His excuse , that he
picked up the wrong bat, one used in practice, is a joke. No player would
throw off his timing by using a lighter bat in practice. The fact that none
of the other bats on the bench were corked means nothing. Only an idiot
would bring more that one corked to the bench, that way if you happen to get
caught, you can have them check your other bats and when they find nothing
make up some idiotic story about the corked bat being you practice bat.

In my eyes, Sosa is a cheater, and finding this corked bat take away from
all this Home Run achievements. He's a liar and fraud. It makes you wonder
if his entire "nice guy" persona is a sham.

What I was even more upset about was the media coverage of this. Here in New
York City there are a few "Sports Talk" shows on the radio, the mot popular
being "Mike & the Mad Dog" on WFAN. The attitude of the Mad Dog was that
this was not a big deal. The guy got caught cheating, big deal. Suspend him
and that's it. Well - it is a big deal. A big name Major League player got
caught cheating. Cheating at that level, or any level for that matter is
totally unacceptable. It sends a terrible message to the kids who watch that
game and the fact that MLB suspended Sammy for only 8 games sends a bad
message to everyone - that cheating is something we are willing to tolerate.

The other show that is on here, also on WFAN is the "Overnight with Joe
Badingo" and it is Joe's contention that this is no big deal because
EVERYONE DOES IT, so who cares. Woo, wait a second there. Everyone does it
so it is ok? That doe not sound right to me. Would it be OK if his wife
cheated on him? After all, all wives cheat on their husbands. What kids of
message does that attitude say about our society and what kind of message
does it send to our kids?

Has our society descended in to such an immoral place that cheating is
accepted as no big deal because everyone does it? Do we really want our kids
to learn that cheating, not just in sports, but anything else is OK if other
do it too?

As far as I am concerned, Sosa should be banned from Baseball and never
enter the hall of fame. In addition any other player who has ever been or
ever is caught cheating should also be banned. Any players who admitted to
cheating after they retired or entered the hall of fame should be banned and
removed from the hall. It's time to take a stand for what is right and not
accept this dishonest behavior.

Sammy Sosa used an illegal substance to enhance his performance & got a
long-weeked off.

Ben Johnson used an illegal substance to enhance his performance and
got banned for life.

mmmmmmm - can you imagine the baseball players union if Selig banned
Sammy for life Smile

Selig is the one who should be banned for life. This "it counts" idea is
the stupidest crap from him yet.

Of course you can't forget last year when he said he would be willing to
take a steroid test, but just "not right then".

What's this? I can't remember, but wasn't Ben Johnson the one involved in the
"bunt fiasco" against Curt's close to perfect game?

Why does everybody believe that sammy is guilty? Cause thats what THEY
would do! Hey back off people. Joe Morgan did the same thing and said
so in an article for ESPN. Get your info together and then make a
judgement. Anyway people will forget once he breaks hanks record in 6
years or so!

That was Ben =Davis=, currently part of the catching mix in Seattle (whose
manager and emergency back-up were both in AZ unis and had nothing good to
say about Davis' stunt that afternoon; must make for an interesting
clubhouse dynamic at times); Ben Johnson was (and, presumably, still is) a
Canadian sprinter of West African descent who got nailed by the IOC for
using one of the millions of substances on the organization's "banned" list.

(And I promise not to say one more word about the IOCrimin -- whoops, sorry,
like I said, not one more word. Smile

Hey, maybe Sosa's givin' the cork to somebody else's wife? Sosa's a dirty
rotten double-cheater!

Right. And we should chop peoples' hands off for stealing a loaf of bread,
Hammurabi.
I agree that the talk show blowhards are flippant about the corked bat, but
let the punishment fit the crime.
As a White Sox fan, I'd love to see him fry I guess, but laughing at him and
those snivelly cub fans is plenty good as it is.
As a baseball fan in general, I suppose 8 game suspension is enough..
There's plenty of punishment left for him as his career will probably remain
"tarnished."

Huh? What does that mean? Waited for what? So you could make up your mind?
Sounds like you had it made up a long time ago.
