I don't know if I agree with part of that assessment. I don't think there's
much danger of them becoming the newest Steinbrenner imitators, but at the
same time, I don't think they are anti-fan either. They've built a very
excellent farm system and the future with or without the stadium looks very
good. Remember, the stadium is being micromanaged by the DC council and
their resident bitch-on-wheels. For someone to be part of the negotiations
until they're through, and be up on stage with Williams saying "c'mon let's
all get behind our new team", and then afterwards start rewriting (without
any further negotiations) what the agreement to bring the Nationals here
said, and to put an unrealistic cap on the cost of the stadium before you
even know who's going to build it is unconscionable. This was all before
the Lerner's came on board, so there's not much they can really do about it.
The situation at RFK is that the stadium is almost 50 years old. I don't
remember when it officially opened, but I remember seeing a press conference
of JFK's talking about DC Stadium as it used to be called. Let's give them
a few years before passing judgement about the Lerners not respecting the
fans.
