Baseball America has report that the Pirates may have a crack at
Cleveland minor league outfielder Brain Barton in the Rule V draft
tomorrow. That would be a real coupe if they could land this fella:

Seasons AB R H 2B 3B HR SB CS BB SO AVG OBP SLG OPS
2005-2007 1278 226 404 71 12 35 80 28 152 304 .316 .416 .473 .

Aren't these Duffy's stats? Wink

He does strike out quite a bit. A 3/1 ratio to his walks. Looks like he can
run. Power? Averaging about 12 dingers a year. How old is he?

Might need him to take Bay's place though. So long Jason, we hardly even
knew ya.

Oops, that's only a 2 to 1 ratio of strikeouts to walks. (Math Dislecsicia.)

History of the Strikeout

The strikeout is as old as baseball itself. Alexander Cartwright's
Knickerbocker Rules, drawn up in 1845 and considered the foundation of the
modern game, define the strikeout as follows:
Three balls being struck at and missed and the last one caught, is a
hand-out; if not caught is considered fair, and the striker bound to run.
(Rule #11)
This is essentially the same rule in use today, with the addition of the
called strike (1858) and the provision that the batter is automatically out
if there are less than two out and a runner on first. In 1880, the rules
were changed to specify that a third strike had to be caught on the fly. In
1887, the number of strikes for an out was changed to four, but promptly
changed back to three the next season. (Egad!) A foul bunt was classified as
a strike in 1894, and a foul tip in 1895.

I know you're just joking but still it's worth pointing out that it
took Duffy seven season in the minors to accumulate the same number of
walks that Barton. That .416 OBA and a smidge of power is what
seperates them and boy wouldn't it be nice to have a number like that
in the lead off spot.

Doesn't matter now though, they let him pass and St. Louis will take
the gamble.

Picked up pitcher, Evan Meek instead. Who dat?

I also understand they drafted 4 others in Rule V draft? Does that mean all
these guys have to stay in the majors? Seems extreme. That's 5 ML player
roster spots on the team?! But then, I have no clue how the mysterious Rule
V really works, so I'm sure that's probably not the case.

A youngish fella who throws with tremendous velocity but has had
trouble so far with control. Nothing to lose I suppose to see if
they can fix him.

I believe there's a major and minor league portion of the draft and
the Pirates only selected one player in the major league portion.

Okay. I was in the Burg last week (watching Steelers/Bengals game) and the
cabbie who drove me from the airport basically said that Colborn (old
pitching coach) was the reason Duke got hurt, trying to get him to change
his arm angle and also the reason a couple of other guys were "messed up".
Getting rid of him was the best thing the Pirates have done so far over the
winter he claims, so, since cabbies general know what they're talkiing
about, maybe the new staff will have better results. Meeks sounds
interesting and maybe he'll be a diamond in the rough.

Ah, that would make sense.

....Incidentally, glad to see Castillo go. Just never seemed to have a
winning attitude about him and I think, overvalued himself greatly. A lot of
wasted talent IMHO.

And Salomon Torres for two minor leaguers with decent stats? A good move, as
I think Torres is past his prime as a set-up man and/closer, and at best, is
a long reliever now.
