Pirates Rule 5 Draft results

This morning, the Pittsburgh Pirates had five farmhands chosen in the Major
League-portion of the Rule 5 Draft in New Orleans. The following players,
who cost $50,000 to select, must remain on their new club's 25-man roster
for the entire 2004 season, or offered back to their parent organization for
$25,000:
a.. Chris Shelton (INF/C) - No. 1 pick overall to Detroit
a.. Rich Thompson (OF) - No. 2 pick overall to San Diego
a.. Frank Brooks (LHP) - No. 4 pick overall to New York (NL)
a.. Jeff Bennett (RHP) - No. 5 pick overall to Milwaukee
a.. Jose Bautista (INF) - No. 6 pick overall to Baltimore
A total of 20 players were chosen in the Major League-portion of the Rule 5
draft (Cleveland also had five players selected).
In addition, the Pirates selected three players in the Triple-A portion of
the Rule 5 Draft, and lost one minor leaguer. The following three players
were selected by the Bucs for $12,000 each:
a.. Justin Lord (RHP) - No. 10 pick overall from Kansas City...Justin went
3-3 with a 3.97 ERA (65.2ip/29er) and one save in 32 combined games (one
start) with Burlington (A) and Wilmington (A).
a.. Gary Thomas (OF) - No. 31 pick overall from Cubs...Gary, who was named
to the California League post-season All-Star team, hit .303 (151-for-498)
with 30 doubles, 12 home runs, 68 RBI and 95 runs scored in 117 games with
Modesto (Oakland's A).
a.. Alexis Gordon (OF) - No. 44 pick overall from Baltimore...Alexis hit
..219 (57-for-260) with 14 doubles, four home runs and 32 RBI in 77 combined
games with Frederick (A) and Delmarva (A).
Infielder Chris Bass, who spent the 2003 campaign with Hickory (Pirates' A),
was selected by Florida with the 23rd pick overall.
Pittsburgh did not select or lose a player in the Double-A portion of the
draft.
