| The Rose Award goes to Jason Kubel of the Minnesota Twins, who went
two-for-four with six RBI and scored one run in a 12-5 win over the
Chicago White Sox.
Kubel hit a grand slam. The 12 runs were the Twins' most since they
beat the White Sox 20-14 and 12-0 on July 6, 2007.

How many times are you going to give the Rose Award to a player that
hits a grand slam? Pete Rose only had 1 grand slam in his entire
career. That's one grand salami in 24 seaons spanning over 14,000 ABs.
I would *bet* that he's got the lowest grand slam rate of any player
with over 7,000 ABs. >> Stay informed about: The Rose Award For 4-9-2008. |

But he has the highest grand slam rate of any player with more than
4256 hits.
Pete Rose remains the game's greatest hitter.

When you consider that half of the players in the HoF are from the pre
Jackie Robinson era it seems sort of strange to exclude Pete Rose just
because he had a weakness for gambling. >> Stay informed about: The Rose Award For 4-9-2008. |

He is not excluded from the HOF because he has a weakness for
gambling. He is excluded because he is under a lifetime banishment
from baseball. And his banishment came about because he bet on
baseball, which is altogether different from having a weakness for
gambling.

I suppose somebody has pointed out to you that he also had more at
bats than anybody else, so his odds were better than anybody else.
Probably you also know that of all the MLB players ever, Charlie
Hustle has been put out more times than anyone else. So by your
logic, he is not only the greatest hitter, he is also the greatest at-
batter, and the greatest outer. Oh, did I mention he is serving out a
lifetime banishment from the sport for betting on baseball? Something
to be proud of.

Of course he bet on baseball. He had a gambling illness. When somebody
makes 30+ phone calls to the sports score hotline in a few hours that is a
clear sign of an illness. If only he had the internet back then he would be
in the Hall. He still has more base hits than anyone who is in the HoF. Ty
Cobb and Babe Ruth were not exactly Eagle Scouts either. >> Stay informed about: The Rose Award For 4-9-2008. |

Huh? Are you saying you are right because you are old, or because you
have been a Rose fan for a long time?
Your logic is something else. Something other than logic, I mean. So
you believe that he had the most ABs because he was the greatest
hitter? And you believe that he has the most outs of any player in
history because he was the greatest hitter?
Here's a (personally painful) example of the flaw in your logic: In
2007, Nick Punto inexplicably tallied 472 ABs. Now the 2007 Twins
were no great shakes, but that puts him 5th on the list for that
year. By your logic he was the 4th greatest hitter on that team.
Want to see his numbers? BA: .210; SLG: 271; OPB: .291. Seventeen
Twins had better averages. Seventeen Twins slugged better. Fourteeen
Twins got on base more often. The fact that Rose got a lot of outs
does not mean he was a great hitter, it means he was a great at-
batter. That's not necessarily something to be proud of. Ask Nick
Punto.
You believe whatever makes you happy. Just don't try to pass any of
that off as logical.

HOF eligibility requires that the player not be on the "banned for
life" list. He's on it. You are wrong.

He lives every day under banishment from baseball. The fact that he
agreed to it means nothing except that he got caught and had no excuse
for his rule-breaking conduct or his lying.

You know, you say that like one day Pete just got up and decided he
was no longer interested in baseball. The truth is that he was in big
trouble and he knew it. And so does everybody else. I know I am
going out on a limb, but I think even you know it.

Gambling is an illness? How convenient to make gamblers into some sort
of a victim. Gambling is the result of free will decisions, not any
germ or virus.
Exactly how does someone contract this gambling illness? Is it
contagious? A virus or bacterial?
Gambling is an addiction, not an illness. >> Stay informed about: The Rose Award For 4-9-2008. |

Actually, Pete Rose was not "banished" from baseball. Pete Rose
walked away.
You're the kind of shrill little man that screams "you're fired" at
someone's back as they're walking away, having quit in disgust.

Pete Rose.

When all else fails....start insulting the poster you're replying to.
You've thrown up two weak, non-quality arguments already and the only thing
you have left in the tank is that he's the greatest hitter? PFFTTT!! Being
the greatest hitter doesn't entitle him to walk all over the rule book by
virtue of HOF status or holding an MLB record. I don't think anybody would
argue his worth for hitting, it's his worth for illegally betting on
baseball that scorns the fans.
