| With his grand slam last night, A-Rod reached 150 RBI (151 actually)
and became only the fourth Yankee in club history to reach 150 RBI
in a season. Gehrig reached the plateau seven times.
Ruth reached 150 five times and DiMaggio did it twice.
Joltin' Joe was the last to accomplish the feat 59 years ago
when he drove in 155 in 1948.

Unfortunately with all those great seasons the Yankees only had 4
World Championships in those years of superlative individual
performance. Interesting that they didn't win one WS in the years of
Babe Ruth's 150+ RBI seasons. Maybe by the time the playoffs came
around they were all tired from swinging so much... >> Stay informed about: A-Rod, the Babe, Gehrig and DiMaggio |

Except for 1927. The most famous Yankee team of all time.
Oops!
And some of those 150-RBI seasons happened in the same year.
1927: Ruth, Gehrig (WS)
1930: Ruth, Gehrig
1931: Ruth, Gehrig
1937: Gehrig, DiMaggio (WS)
In 1923, Babe had only 131 RBI. Of course, he hit .393 with 45 doubles, 13
triples, 41 homers, and 170 walks...
In 1928, the Babe and Gehrig had *only* 142 RBI each
I really don't know what Joe's trying to say here. Apparently, he thinks
that runs are overrated, or something.
And of course, there's that bizarre comment about the "playoffs". >> Stay informed about: A-Rod, the Babe, Gehrig and DiMaggio |

Initially, when the post season was expanded to ore than the WS,
"playoff" data were universally compiled separately. Now a lot of the
sources combine WS and playoff data. And when you listen to people talk
about post-season they tend not to make the WS distinction as much as
in the past. They talk "post-season" or, frequently "playoff" to
include WS numbers. I don't like it either, and I'm not trying to
defend it, but I think that's the genesis. >> Stay informed about: A-Rod, the Babe, Gehrig and DiMaggio |

Not entirely sure if there is a point. I think I went to look up the
numbers assuming those massive rbi totals would coincide with
championships but they didn't translate as much as I thought they
would. I think because when a team relies so much on one individual
for run production it might be easier for a playoff opponent to pitch
around that player. I'm not sure. It is telling that two of those
championships were won with 2 players with big rbi totals. Much harder
to pitch around 2 players. I just hope that Matsui and Posada step it
up in these playoffs because no team is going to let Arod beat them. >> Stay informed about: A-Rod, the Babe, Gehrig and DiMaggio |
