I think Freitas is over-rated, but that's a different discussion. We'll
see how he deals with Corrales.

Boxing is not a game, like football, or an atletic contest like swimming or
Tour de France; the fighters risk their lives in the ring. It is not enough to
be a good athlete, you need an extraordinary degree of mental toughness
and huge balls. Ali picking himself up from the canvas after the monster
left hook Frazier landed on his jaw was IMO the most glorious and valliant effort I've
ever witnessed.

I was a child in Europe when the Ali-Frazier figths took place. I remember
the excitement like it was yesterday. >> Stay informed about: Best Rivalry of all time in any sport |

I didn't say he was good.
I just said before he gained his belts, boxing for most part of Brazilians
was a sport they didn't care about.

Nothing can beat that Swiss woman that gave everything to complete the

Dont be childish now. Ali was a man of great spirit--which is
not very common for an athlete. In addition, he was extremely
influential politically and socially in the US. >> Stay informed about: Best Rivalry of all time in any sport |

A marathon is nothing compared to going 15 rounds agains a fighter
of Frazier's caliber. A marathon is a fight against yourself. If you
train hard enough, you can finish it. A championship fight is a fight against
an opponent intent of bashing your brains in. >> Stay informed about: Best Rivalry of all time in any sport |

USA vs. USSR in the olympics.
Two games will, in my mind, have to stand for the whole:
The 1980 Hockey game, the "Miracle on Ice."
and
The 1972 Men's Basketball gold medal game, which is a good contender
for "most blatant cheating by officials in the history of sport." (Is
there anything else that even comes close?) >> Stay informed about: Best Rivalry of all time in any sport |

How about good vs. evil (also known as Red Sox vs. Yankees) They *start*
civil wars over that one... >> Stay informed about: Best Rivalry of all time in any sport |

Easy. Cricket. India vs Pakistan.
Name one other situtation where both teams were the same country 50 years
ago, and have fought 3 wars since.
Plus, their divergent contemporary structures - one being a multicultural,
increasingly prosperous democracy, and the other being a proxy
dictatorship - makes this unique rivalry all the more interesting. >> Stay informed about: Best Rivalry of all time in any sport |

I wouldn't argue against Pelé being the greatest international sports
figure of all time, but I wouldn't argue against Ali either, whom
you're not giving him nearly enough credit. Both had a tremendous
impact inside and outside their sport. Pelé was certainly more
dominant on the field and perhaps more of an ambassador for his sport,
but Ali had a cultural transcendence that is tough to match.
Actually, there are a lot of parallels between the two. Both are very
charismatic, great with children, and had rather similiar career arcs,
with multiple comebacks and incrdible victories. I wouldn't want to
choose between the two. >> Stay informed about: Best Rivalry of all time in any sport |

I don't know if you can call it blatant cheating. It was terrible
officiating, that's for sure. >> Stay informed about: Best Rivalry of all time in any sport |

I used to be a boxing fan, but since Mike Tyson rose to prominence and Don King
has pretty much ruled boxing, I just can't follow it anymore. Championship
boxing matches seem more to resemble WWE wrestling events these days.
Michael O'Connor - Modern Renaissance Man
"The likelihood of one individual being correct increases in a direct
proportion to the intensity with which others try to prove him wrong"
