Post subject: Rios Should Abandon Crouch In Batting Stance--He Has Lost His Power Stroke
Archived from groups: alt>sports>baseball>tor-bluejays, others (more info?)

Experts say that there is a significant similarity between a golfer's and
baseball batter's swings.

You never see Tiger Woods driving i.e. teeing off from a crouch position.
The reason is he would lose much
of his power.

None of the really great hitters in MLB hit or have hit from a crouch
either. Not Ted Williams, Babe Ruth,
Ken Griffey Jr. Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron. Bobby Bonds or Alex
Rodriquez.

Before Rios adopted the crouch, suggested by batting coach Mickey Bradley,
he ofen hit opposite
field home runs. Now these balls slapped to right field don't even reach the
warning track.

And most of Rios's shots to centre field and left field fall short. I think
this lack of power comes from
his hitting from a crouch. I may be wrong, of course. He might have some
kind of injury like Vernon Wells
that he hasn't disclosed. Rios did his best hitting last year (06) before
the staff infection. Even though in 07
he has had a pretty good year, it could still be much better for a player of
his abilities.
