Remy suggested that Toronto is playing tough but that the O's have all
but gone home for the season a week early. I do see his point, but is
it also some reverse psychology, trying to get them motivated to put
up a fight against NYY?

The O's had a great start and have a few quality players. Losing
Roberts has hurt their attack, but generally they have guys who should
be hitting better than they are showing now. They have a few good arms
in the pen and a couple of guys who can start. I think it is hard for
a team with that much talent to lose as many in a row as they have.
But I am always fascinated by baseball streaks --- even NYY this year
has had big winning and losing streaks that are hard to explain. In
that respect, the RS have had a more normal season.

I hope Don notices that the Jays usually lose when the other team
scores first. I say this because I'm hoping he will reward our hitters
who are responsible for early scoring, should they come through for
us, as I expect they will.

They aren't listening to Remy.

Well Columbo, how many teams don't usually lose when the other team
scores first? This is hardly a startling revelation especially
considering Toronto is under .500 overall.

Do you honestly think that the Orioles players are watching the Red Sox
television broadcast, or that they even care what Remy says?

Probably not, but Remy should still be given props for doing what
little he can. Smile

I believe the history is that the team that scores first wins more
often than not. That's certainly the usual wisdom, though like a lot
of things in baseball, the edge isn't very big and it's not clear
that it's decisive, either.

There sure isn't any disadvantage to scoring first, though, so it's a
good idea no matter what. Score early and score often: not too much
can go wrong with that plan except for the all too possible failure
to execute it.

You are right that teams generally have losing records when the other
team scores first (I think all teams this year). I believe I heard
that Boston has the best record this year of any team in games that it
does not score first and that Toronto has the worse record. Toronto's
record onthe road when it does not score first is really, really
dismal --- losing something like 80% of the time.

No and no. But if Remy encourages people to talk that way --- if the
view around baseball, with some help from Remy, is that Baltimore has
packed it in --- they may respond. No team likes that reputation.

Clearly Baltimore's manager hasn't given up, I've never seeen so many
pitching changes as this weekend.
