The key is for JS to know as soon as possible where he stands, so that
he can make a few plays early in the free agent market.
I think he's at least going to take a stab at extending Teixeira this
offseason, will try to keep Andruw on a one-year deal, and if he can't
make a quick deal of Renteria for a pitcher then I wouldn't be surprised
to see a final curtain contract for Glavine (whose 103 OPS+ is the same
as that of Chuck James, FWIW). I don't see both of those things
happening, because of the possibility that Hampton comes back.
They could have a decent amount of payroll to play with, though. A
number of guys will see raises coming, but taking Andruw off the books
and trading Renteria opens up a lot of cash. Combine that with the
forthcoming end of Hampton's contract allowing for some backloading in
long-term deals and there are possibilities. Having guys like McCann,
Francoeur, Escobar and Johnson for cheap gives the team a decent amount
of flexibility, and I imagine Lillibridge will have a role next year
too. Just a matter of how well they exercise their judgment as they
prepare for the post-Smoltz and possibly post-Chipper eras.
Who knows, maybe sam will get his wish and JS will go get Santana.
