Be careful what you ask for, TW/AOL bashers.

Wow, that could make things really ugly. And this after the early rumors
were for an increase. This may be false, but I find it all the more
plausible that the increase rumors were to sway the approval of their deal.

Of course it is just a rumor...

I just hope it's not another case of lying corporate vultures saying what
they need to say to grab a franchise while all along they had a plan to gut
the team, hold it for a couple of years at reduced cost, and then sell it
off at profit. I'm not holding my breath -- but I might if it would do any
good.

Liberty Media needs to quash this rumor right away if it's not true. If
they don't...yow. Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse.

The only people who thought things couldn't get any worse were those who
were ignorant of the payrolls of the rest of the league. The Braves'
payroll was average at worst. They weren't near the top anymore, but
they were nowhere near the bottom either.

But how many of those other payrolls had been near the top and were then cut
to their present level?

The Braves web site says that the rumor is false.

A pretty forceful denial from Terry McQuirk, noting that a slash in
payroll would be a breach of Liberty's contract with MLB (during the
selling process it was agreed that Liberty would not slash payroll and
would maintain McQuirk and the front office as is.)

I'm actually liking the sounds I'm hearing from the FO about
increasing payroll a bit. I don't expect to jump back to the 95-100
mil range per 1998 but I do think we may be happier with free agent
acquisitions in the near future than we have been in the recent past.

The key is for JS to know as soon as possible where he stands, so that
he can make a few plays early in the free agent market.

I think he's at least going to take a stab at extending Teixeira this
offseason, will try to keep Andruw on a one-year deal, and if he can't
make a quick deal of Renteria for a pitcher then I wouldn't be surprised
to see a final curtain contract for Glavine (whose 103 OPS+ is the same
as that of Chuck James, FWIW). I don't see both of those things
happening, because of the possibility that Hampton comes back.

They could have a decent amount of payroll to play with, though. A
number of guys will see raises coming, but taking Andruw off the books
and trading Renteria opens up a lot of cash. Combine that with the
forthcoming end of Hampton's contract allowing for some backloading in
long-term deals and there are possibilities. Having guys like McCann,
Francoeur, Escobar and Johnson for cheap gives the team a decent amount
of flexibility, and I imagine Lillibridge will have a role next year
too. Just a matter of how well they exercise their judgment as they
prepare for the post-Smoltz and possibly post-Chipper eras.

Who knows, maybe sam will get his wish and JS will go get Santana.

Not at all; however, the team is going to want to assess where he stands
this winter, and if they think he can serve even a fifth starter role
next year then they'll only be looking for one more starter to fill the
gap between Hudson/Smoltz/James and Hampton.

The Braves gave Horacio Ramirez four years to fail. James has pitched
better than Ramirez and has more upside. I suspect the question is
whether they go with Smoltz/Hudson/Hampton/James/Carlyle/Cormier or if
they have to find a better option at #3 than Hampton (moving Carlyle/
Cormier down the depth chart assuming Hampton pitches at #5.)

I'd be happy with that solution if it meant money to go after Johan in
2009. Johan/Huddy/Old John/Crazy Chuck and my left ass cheek is a
pretty nice rotation.

Ahh yes, "my left ass cheek". I remember seeing that at a little hole-
in-the-wall theater in midtown Manhattan. Back in the good old days
before Giuliani came in and Disney-fied Times Square.
