Anyone have a clever way of determining which players finished their
careers in 2004? Ie, played in 2004 but not in 2005? I'd be happy
with a list of players who had at least 1500 games played for batters
or at least 150 wins or saves for pitchers . . .

Thanks!

Doug

Thanks! I'll try to do so -- others can comment if I've left anyone
off my list of "significant retirees"

Did any of these guys just miss 2005 because of injury?

Wasn't he released by the Giants a few weeks ago..

He's trying to come back as an Outfielder.

He suffered a major injury and, at least in theory, may be coming back.
He's certainly young enough that if he retired, its because of the
injury.

> Dreifort, Darren LAD

He's been on the shelf all season with an injury. Who knows if he
comes back, but he's not "retired".

> Kelton, David CHN

He was at AAA all season for the Cubs.

> Kolb, Danny MIL

The Braves may wish that he was retired, but I believe he was even
active in the post season this year. Not sure how he got on this list.

> Majewski, Val BAL

Another young guy hurt during the spring and out for the season.

> Murray, Calvin CHN

With Kelton in Iowa.

Hung around the Padres all season, hoping to make a September comeback.
I'd be surprised to see him again.

Active with the Padres, as recently as Saturday.

>>> Fullmer, Brad TEX

Injured in 2005, signed to play in Japan in 2006. Probably not retired

>>> Garcia, Karim BAL

Played in Japan in 2005. Same with several others on the list (Shane
Spencer, Tony Batista, Jolbert Cabrera and Randall Simon all come to
mind) - Batista certainly could return to MLB at any time if he so
wished and if a team offered more money than Softbank threw at him.

>>> Hermansen, Chad TOR

Bounced around Mexico, the indies and the minors in 2005. Could return
someday.

Who ever did this must have picked up the post season rosters for the 8
playoff teams as the Braves left Kolb off theirs.

Nope. Wasn't even active during the year, at least in terms of throwing
strikes past people.

Hammonds retired this season. Salmon was injured for the entire season
and is expected to retire. Kieschnick is in the minors. Leskanic filed for
FA after last years WS, but nobody signed him. I dont know if he caught on
with a minor league team or not.

God I hope not. A few people have mentioned Taveras as a
possible candidate in the media, but it would easily be the
worst election since Weiss in '88. Even Listach had a better
season.
