Randy Johnson kill't a bird with a pitch and...

It was a dove, decimated in the 7th inning of a game some years ago.
Plenty of video available. Also, some discussions on how that pitch
was called by the umpire, none conclusive as far as I've been able to
find.

So, how was that pitch called?
