You survived dynasties, chokes, 9-11, classic games, trolls, Red Sox
championships. And yet, you were done in by SPAM.
I first posted to you around March-April 1996. At that time, I did not know what
I, or we, were in for. It was a great ride. In those 12 years, I made friends
here, agrued, fought with the BBAC, broke up with the BBAC, married my wonderful
wife, and had a beautiful baby girl in 2006. I occasionally thought of quitting
to post here, but I posting here, was like watching TV for some people, or
reading books for others. Posting here was a hobby, or a pastime. Or even a walk
in the park.
All that is gone now. You lost not to the Sox, but to Gucci, Nike, Viagra, and
the country of China.
I will check in once in a while, to offer an invite to the regulars who we
missed, or ones that post very infrequently. And I will not even rule out a
return. But until the SPAM problem is gone, I am out of here.
Best of luck and take care.
For regulars here, you are welcome to:

It is pretty sad what has happened to the board but nothing lasts forever.
Soon enough the RS board will suffer the same fate. >> Stay informed about: RIP asbnyy |

What spam? Most of us over there have working filters and killfiles.
I see maybe 2-4 a day there, and on a heavy day it might hit 6 here. >> Stay informed about: RIP asbnyy |

If your client threads email messages then its pretty close to a NG
feel. Most are using thunderbird or agent. Mail in OSX works as well. >> Stay informed about: RIP asbnyy |

But it starts slow and then continues from there. One thing that didn't help
here is the amount of people who would then visit those sites. Once the
spammers find out people are looking, they will spam even more. >> Stay informed about: RIP asbnyy |

In Thunderbird you can set the folder view to display only unread
messages or threads with unread messages. Not sure if other clients can
do this as well. >> Stay informed about: RIP asbnyy |

I'm one of the ones using Agent for the google group. I used a gmail
account to sign up so had to forward the emails to my pop3 address after I
decided to try using Agent. I created a secondary email address for Verizon
and set gmail (and the Yankees googlegroup preferences) to forward email to
it. I think you could bypass the extra steps using gmail and just use a
pop3 address to sign up with as long as you set the group option to send
replies as emails. Some people reported they weren't seeing their own
replies in Agent but I do so I'm not sure what causes that. It could be the
extra forwarding.
I added the verizon email address and persona to Agent. Next created a
folder in Agent named Yankees_googlegroup and dragged it right above this
group on my list of usenet groups. Went to the folder properties and set it
to use the new verizon persona (email address) and set it so all messages
would go to that folder rather than my inbox. All the email posts appear
in Red and responses are threaded. When I read them they turn black. The
only thing different than usenet is the emails coming in are slower and
rather than purging for newsgroups I have to use the delete function in
Agent for emails. That and, as far as I can tell, I can't force Agent to
re-download old emails like you could with newsgroup posts.
Most of this was fairly easy if you know your way around Agent. Since I
don't use it for email much, I had to figure it out on the fly. Other
than that I only had to ask in the Agent newsgroup how to make emails add a
person's name or address to the quoted text when replying. Agent does that
by default for newsgroups but in email it defaults to "You wrote:" instead
of "(name) wrote:"

That's how I have tbird configured. Also, I customized the toolar with a
"view" dropdown so I can quickly switch between "view:all" and
"view:unread". It rocks. The only thing I really miss from xnews is the
id token that allows xnews to flag all posts that reference yourown.

I'm using Agent and it defaults to showing unread messages in red and they
turn black once read. At least mine does. It's been so long since I've
used the same customizations I'm no longer sure what I customized and what
the defaults are.
Can Thunderbird re-download old messages if you delete them? Since Agent
doesn't support Imap, the emails are via pop3. I thought Imap in
Thunderbird might allow you to set all messages as unread so they'd download
again.
